2 driving licences

Can somebody explain the rules and theory behind plod having 2 driving licences, the points that can be added to both and the circumstances when they can e.g. off duty etc etc

Somebody at work mentioned it but he's a notorious b'shitter for facts.

As I understand it one is the normal Driving Licence that you and I have.

The other is a qualification to allow the holder to drive police vehicles - and there are a number of Classes - the highest being Class 1.

Tonyrec or Gone can, no doubt, provide the detail...but that's the gist of it.

S 102 RTA 88 ... a person is disqualified for obtaining a Licence to drive a MV of any class so long as he is the holder of another licence authorising him to drive a MVv of that class, whether suspended or not.

Which goes on to Section 103 obtaining a Licence whilst disqualified - 1000 notes but no points.

Thats just mere possession gets worse if he uses with intent to deceive etc, when it goes up to the statutory maxim -5,000 notes.

It was quite common a decade ago for someone to hop on the ferry to Ireland when it was just a written driving test and obtain a licence. Many done so when they were banned for drink driving etc.

I dont think it can happen anymore and rightly so. However, If you have a holiday home in Spain, France or the like then by having an address I believe you can apply to take their driving test and obtain a licence.

Foreign licence, not Irish, means he can drive in the UK under his foreign (natural) name as well as his UK name.

Police Officers have the normal DVLA driving licence like everyone else. They also have a Police Driving Permit..which permits them to drive certain vehicles; eg:

PC1234 Streetcop:
Standard car <90bhp 1/1/94 to 1/1/24
Advanced car >90bhp 18/4/99 to 1/1/24
4 x 4 car 10/5/99 to 1/1/24
Personnel Carrier (transit size) 3/5/96 to 1/1/24

Police RTCs=0
Penalty Points=0

Now for example, if I kerb the Volvo and cause £250 damage...I wouldn't be eligible for points on my DVLA licence. However, I might get 3 points on my police permit. If I get another 3 points, my authority to drive high performance vehicles will be withdrawn pending assessments and a re-test.

Ok so understand now, your police licence is for damage to police property etc and normal DVLA 12 point licence

About right...but DVLA points and police permit points can go hand in hand...So if I collide with another car, whilst on a blue light run..and it's my fault..I might get 3 points on my civvy licence and 3 on my permit..

So you're exceeding the limit because that's yer job(at times ), you hit somebody and it's seen as your fault even tho your blue'd up and the next thing you know you've got 12 points and yer licence and your banned from driving. Hmmmm? seems a bit harsh but I guess it depends largely on circumstances

There are a few harsh things....

Obviously I do many miles per year....lots of them at mega speeds, pursuits with dangerous criminals etc etc.....However, should I have a collision, then I'm duty bound to inform my own personal car insurance company at time of renewal...as failure to do so is a breach of the contracts....

I lived in Italy as a child/teenager and passed my driving test there.

When we moved there my sister, who had a UK driving licence was presented an Italian licence after showing her UK one (which she got to keep).

When I returned to this country the UK did not accept Italian licences (double standards?) and I had to pass a UK test within 12 months - at this point I had both UK and Italian licences. Shortly after this the UK started to accept Italian (EU) licences, as I had a (Italian) Motorcycle licence and had not yet taken the English bike test I was allowed to get a UK Bike licence (without having to take a test) but had to surrender the Italian one (which was a car & bike combined licence).

Should I have been able to keep the Italian one? - at the time (early '80s & pre-scamming) it didn't bother me but it would be useful now to have a foreign licence.

Maybe you could have kept it then but now it's illegal in the U.K. .... but not impossible .... to have two EU licences.

So is that why all the panda cars are rubbish 1.4 Astras around here. To keep it under 90bhp? And considering that most people over 25 or so drive cars over 90bhp shouldn't that be adjusted to keep up with modern engines...?

not really...Panda cars are for tootling about...not for pursuing other vehicles...
