I like to make (tamiya) RC cars. Here's our front room (ignore all the av crap it's going to be going this summer). My missus genuinely won't let me get rid of / move the big printer to the right of the mac and let me use that area as my modelling space frown That half of the desk is ideal cos it's out the way (that area is sort of tucked under the stairs), and isn't used at all. Just a load of junk there (mostly mine). It's quite long that table - the area I could use is about 1 meter which is perfect.

The rest of the house is not conducive as it's not very large - only 2 bed, and two main rooms downstairs - the open plan kitchen has nowhere, and this is part of the (quite large) front room.

Otherwise I will have to use my workshop / shed but that's not very nice of an evening if you know what I mean, and is more based around full scale mechanics type stuff ie motorcycles and lots of tools!

Where do you all do your modelling? Pics would be good to make me jealous.

I have commandeered a similar space above my computer (and generally there are tools and half-finished projects littering the floor surrounding too). I'll take a picture tomorrow.

Of course your mistake here was to ask permission - you immediately assumed the inferior role. I just told my partner it was going to happen and let her think she had a say in the way I ended up designing it..!

Up until recently I had the entire 3rd bedroom to myself, had a nice desk, compressor and spraybooth all set up for modelling. Then Lufbramatt Jr. came along, that bedroom is now his little nursery room and everything has been packed up to the loft.

So for my 30th birthday I got a shed smile just need to build a workbench and some shelves and I'll be set.

I've a shed in the offing as well. I'm really looking forward to it. I have officially now reached that time in life when a man needs a shed.

I do have a large shed/workshop, I may have to reorganise it and make a nice area for modelling. But it needs some sorting out there's a lot of crap in there, and I keep umming and erring about remaking it entirely. Perhaps I should just give it a quick sort out and make a nice area asap. Here's a pic of it at the bottom of the garden.

Worst I have a nice shed post ever.

But in all seriousness clear out your shed.

I can now fit my car in my garage after clearing out a load of rubbish.

I thought about having a good tidy up before taking this picture but decided against it in the end.

Here's my little corner...

Shed.

1) reorganise it. No point filling your new one with clutter and crap.
2) rebuild it to spec and to improve ability to stay in there for long periods.
3) reclaim testicles from wife.

Though having said that, it looks like you have a young kid/kids? How the hell do you have time for modelling of any description not directly related to them...?

yeah I haven't had for the last 7 years - that's why I want to get started again! I'll be dead soon and the only hobby I want to do, I never get a chance to enjoy!

"Missus won't let you have more space..."

hmm

want to borrow a shovel?

wink

That shed

Fill six inches of the space inside its walls with insulation board, ditto the roof

Work in there all year round

I have a ten foot by six foot bedroom given over to my hobby and my books

I'd swap it for an insulated shed with power points

All I get all day long is "I can smell your 'paint''glue''melted whatever' "Ohh my sinuses - my asthma - my whatever other excuse I can whinge with..."

A shed would be paradise

Sounds familiar - work colleague has been pushed out of the bedroom, then the spare bedroom to his wife's clothes, and now she's complaining again that he has too much stuff. It's filling the under stairs cupboard that could be used for much more useful things (like her coats and shoes that she wants to wear without going upstairs for them).

Insulate the shed and put some guardian gnomes either side (or take up spider collecting). It's your only hope.

I'm really lucky to have a room now. Well 3 actually - the house has 3 rooms in the loft space that have plenty daylight and Velux windows to ventilate. They're not a huge amount of use - the last owners who built the house just had them full of junk. We have our proper desktop PC in the end one for the odd bit of work and gaming (letting my young girls play flight sims and submarine sims mostly) and then a modelling room (often comandeered by same girls to make their models), and the last one which joins a proper public room is used to store my kit stash and is shared with the girls for their dressing up stuff etc.

However before that I lived in a 2 bed 2-up/2-down flat. I could do model making of sorts but was spectacularly non-productive for the 9 years I was there. Mostly because I couldn't spray in the house. I did have (still do but I haven't reassembled it yet) a 10x8 shed with lighting and a full length bench but I shared that with r/c modelling. I swept it regularly but it was still always too dusty to spray.

My dad lives in a modest house and models in a shed. Without balsa dust like mine suffered it works quite well!

Here's looking inside from the door boxedin

I have decided I will use my shed and clear an area. I am wondering whether to clear the bench completely and use that:

or clear the area under the front window and use that. But it has a (very large) compressor sitting there, so that would have to move. Hmmm, or maybe I could leave it there if I put a new worktop up in that area that is deep enough to allow me to still have my legs under it with the compressor there too. I should probably sell the compressor I've only used it about 20 times in 10 years.

Here is my area, located in one of the "bed"rooms, although the room has never seen a bed. It also doubles up as the office.

As already mentioned paint and glue smells should be thought about, although having the area in the lounge is convenient the lingering smell of adhesive and thinners will wear a little thin, for you as well. I shut the door but even then the smell still lingers in the landing area.
