I'm about to pension off my missus's MK1 Leon 1.9TDi FR. It's hit 140k, and my garage have advised its starting to blow oil past the rings and will need a clutch and flywheel in the next 6 months...

We've talked about replacing it with either a MK2 Leon or Audi A3 2.0TDi. She doesn't do a load of miles, but we do use it as our main family car on day trips and holidays as I don't want to hammer my 27 year old BMW too much.

I've read numerous contradictory info online as to whether the 2006-2008 'VW Family' 2.0TDi 140 engine has a DPF filter or not. I'm concerned as she does do a lot of local driving, and I'm trying to pre-empt DPF problems with regeneration etc.

Anyone know either way??

I seem to remember reading its the 8p3 model cr engines late 2008 on have them fitted. We have a 2010 model and only do 10k a year, it does a mixture of short and long journeys like yourself and 7 months in no problems as yet.
If it starts to play up in the future i will consider getting the dpf delete done.
People will tell you not to get a diesel doing under 15k a year but personally for me i love the combination of the power delivery and fuel consumption, i think the 2.0 common rail is a cracking engine.
The 2.0 pd isnt a good engine from what ive read.

I believe in the golf/a3/octy (mk5 golf era) there was no DPF on the 140, just the 170.

It is not a fantastic engine; DPF or not.

The 2.0T petrol of the same vintage and CR diesel in the facelifted car are far better options. If you're getting rid of an older car to avoid problems don't buy a new one known for problems wink

Always the dilemma... I'm actually keen to get another MK1 Leon FR with half the miles as the current one, but OH wants something newer. Seems a no brainer at around £4.5k, and I'd be confident running it for three years - great value for money!

If you're both not doing may miles combined surely you need to rethink if you actually need a diesel? Get a nice nippy petrol and not worry about what kind of driving you're doing and clogging up the DPF. You could end up saving money in the long run too.
