Engine oil pressure drop
Discussion
Howdy, new to this forum, just acquired a 2002 147 2.0 TS. Has anyone had a 'Engine oil pressure low' warning displayed??? It appears when cornering sharply and at a reasonable/fast pace. Bit distracting bleeping away there while I'm trying to keep things going forward. Not very good all round really.
Surely going 'round a corner fast is within normal operating conditions?????>>>>????

If the level is low, and you go round a corner, the oil sloshes away from the pick up pipe and sensors. This is a bad thing and will be damaging your engine! You need your oil level on or very near MAX at all times, especially in a petrol engined Alfa which do like to "use" their oil. Check your level every 1,000 miles until you get a feel for your usage. Top up with 10/40 semi synthetic such as the recommened Selenia 20k or similar. They don't need fully synthetic (expensive) oils.
But PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go check it NOW otherwise you will become another disgruntled Alfa owner saying his car is unreliable and he's never having another one - and it's not always the cars fault you know...

If you wish to continue merrily barreling round corners (and who doesnt?), you might consider getting a baffled sump to prevent the oil sloshing away.
Guy Croft probably does one, and he probably charges the earth for it too, but you can be certain itll be quality.

I certainly hear these engines do not tolerate low oil. Furthermore, being run low on oil may not produce an instant engine failure, but may damage things for a few thousand miles down the road!
I remember years ago when I had my old 1.6 Giulietta. I was a student, and couldn't afford the oil, so spirited cornering produced the aforementioned oil pressure loss due to surge. This happened many times, and I just couldn't kill that engine!! The very last time I drove it (before dismantling it), the 110k mile engine survived engine speeds of considerable greater the the 7500rpm scale!!!
I just had to verify that these Alfa engines were so incredibly bomb proof! My previous car; an Austin Princess was forever damaging its cylinder head for one reason or another. (BTW- over-revving wasn't one of those reasons)
PS, I didn't sell the Giulietta's engine!
