So a bit of research online suggests that a carbon framed bike shouldnt be used in conjunction with clamped bike carrier. Ive recently taken delivery of a Santa Cruz 5010 and have been using it with my Thule 591, but this revelation has made me question it.

Was this advice mostly directed towards more delicate road bike frames or should I be avoiding it?

Thanks in advance.

If its a Thule 951, the clamp on the down tube doesnt need to be tight enough to cause an issue, it is there to keep the bike upright as the wheel straps should be enough to secure the bike. I just wrap an old t shirt around the frame where the clamp holds it which stops any wobble and negates any fear of damage. People who have issues with clamps and carbon frames are almost certainly applying too much pressure to the tube unnecessarily.
