I'll probably copy this over in the Computers and gadgets section also to cover all bases as this question is a bit 'IT' but related to my home cinema.

I've bought all the new bits for my home cinema installation and should get most of it wired up this coming weekend. I bought a new NAS (Synology 415+) and when I plugged it in to test it, a warning message popped up which seemed to be laughing at my router and said I need a new one for optimum performance and mentioned a Gigabit LAN. While I will have all sorts of devices connected to the network, most of the NAS's job is to store multimedia content (ripped Blurays etc).

I still have the original Router I got from my ISP, so have no doubt that it's a rubbish bit of kit and probably a huge bottleneck in network performance. It also doesn't have enough Ethernet ports on it for me to connect all my devices to. I can't think how many I need off hand but would have thought I'd be looking at around 10 - 12.

My question is, as I'm looking to push hi-def content and uncompressed audio over a wired connection, is there a specific router I should be looking for whether that be network performance (Gigabit Lan etc) or a specific manufacturer that generally makes better kit?

Due to the amount of devices I need to connect to it, I'd also assume that I'd need a network switch as there's no such Router to do everything I need out the box?

Many thanks

Edited to say that all devices will on the network on a wired connection
