So im apply for a remortgage of my house with tesco bank. I was going to go with my current lender but forgot to make the application a few weeks back and I’ve just remembered. That was a stroke of luck as tesco bank have a very good rate, 1.59 fixed for 2 years with £195 fees.

Anyway I call them up and they say unless you want to do an execution only service its 3 weeks for a mortgage appointment. So I say ok ill do it myself online.

Apply for it, and its referred, wait a week, and get a call from tesco, telling me that we haven’t disclosed a line of credit for my wife. She has 2 credit cards, 1 with natwest with nothing on it, and 1 with Halifax with a balance of 800 quid on it at 0pc. We disclosed both of these. Tesco then say, no, there is another credit card in your wifes name. we can’t tell you anything about it though.

That’s not very helpful but maybe that’s how it works. They say you need to go on Experian to see what the situation is. We do that. Wait 2 weeks for the frigging pin to arrive, and log in. nothing there apart from the natwest credit card and the Halifax credit card. Nothing is there about this mysterious third credit card.

We call Experian and are told that tesco don’t use them to do a check they use Equifax or core credit. So quite why we were told to use Experian I am not sure. I would have thought, regardless who we use, a straightforward credit card would show up though wouldn’t it?

Time is against us as our fixed deal runs out at the end of the months and I’d like to get this sorted.

So go get a check from Equifax. Not rocket science. Yes, they messed you about with the name, but just go to the other one.

Finders use a number of different agencies. To save time, why not get your wife yo sign up with noddle and see what's showing on there?
If there's an error then they are fairly easily sorted

Not a massive help but access your wife's file through Noddle.co.uk who are free and part of Call Credit so may show up something different.

[edit] too slow....

it seems a bit odd that ive got to keep trying all the different sites before I just get lucky and this credit card pops up. i would have thought they mirrored each other, otherwise what the fk is the point?

It could be an old card that she has stopped using ages ago and its just sitting there with no balance on it. I had this before and I had to write to the company and ask them to close the account. Tesco are not being very helpful. I cant really see why Tesco wont tell you. Its in your other halfs name and your account ( so they are saying )Have you tried ringing them back and speaking with a different more helpful person ?

Don't they just look at your overall credit score and make their mind up?

Yes, I get 3/5 but have effect everything. It also is incorrect with the electoral roll, says we're not on it.

Nobody has an overall credit score. Just a record of credit activity, electoral role and address history. A lender will then 'score' you against their criteria based on this information and the details of what your applying for.

Roughly anyway. I went to great pains to sort my files out with all three agencies back in the day before it went online.

I have an excellent credit file but would likely be refused additional credit because I already have access to a lot.

No because some lenders are only registered with one of the other so a credit card from one lender may appear on one but not on the other.

I had a similar experience with a credit check. 2 anomalies showed up.

One was a storecard that I had used once, 20 years ago, cleared balance and never touched again, but the lender wanted me to acknowledge that the account existed, as I had never closed it.

The other slipped my mind as I pay for a monthly travelcard, but the company structured it as a loan over 11 months for an annual travelcard. The loan appeared on my credit check.

Check with your wife if she might have these types of things that may not be immediately obvious as credit facilities to her.
