Hello

I know absolutely nothing about Whisky, but would like to buy my (American) boss a bottle of Whisky. I've asked here before and got great suggestions and bought a bottle for about £90. Now I know a little more, he likes Macallan. I don't really want to buy that particular brand but would like something like it preferably something that can't be bought in America.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks.

Macallan is a heavily sherried Speyside so there's quite a few options with a similar flavour profile. At around or under the £90 price point you can get some seriously high quality stuff, though in my opinion you're into the law of diminishing returns at around £70 or so (though I know others will disagree!) I like the following;

Glendronach 21, or any of their single cask range for something harder to find
Aberlour 18
Glenfarclas 17 or 21
Glenrothes 1995
BenRiach 15 or 18 PX finish (single cask preferably)

That said, I'd always suggest going into a specialist shop if there's one local to you and having a chat, in my experience they're invariably incredibly helpful.
