Going LG 4K from Panasonic 1080p Plasma
Discussion
Going from an old but still venerable Panasonic TH-42PZ80BA 1080p Plasma set that must be 6 years old and work has an offer of a 4K TV with discount, spread across 12 months of your wages.
I have a choice of 3 that are within my affordability budget, but I figure the 49UF850V is neither here nor there. I'm not going to pay £5 per month extra just for 3D so it's really a choice between the 55UF850V and the 49UF770V
55UF850V UHD 55" ULTRA HD 4K TV, Smart TV with webOS, CINEMA 3D, 2 x 3D glasses
49UF850V UHD 49" ULTRA HD 4K TV, Smart TV with webOS, CINEMA 3D, 2 x 3D glasses I think I've discounted this one. I don't see the point in it as other than the 3D it appears to have exactly the same specification as the 770V below, therefore doesn't interest me
49UF770V UHD 49" ULTRA HD 4K TV, Smart TV with webOS
is going from 42" to 49" a big enough jump? 3D doesn't interest me in the slightest and the difference between the 2 49" sets is only £5 a month. The big difference is the price between the 55 and the 49, going from £58.67 per month to £80.67, a £22 increase and only just manageable.
Content will mainly be from my Sky+HD box, although I have a PS3 for the occasional Blu-Ray and a Roku box to stream from my PC as well.
Any thoughts on the merits of the 55" over the 49"? Is bigger always better?
Thanks in advance.

Our 42PX60 plasma recently conked out. Chatted with the mrs and she wasn't too keen on anything mahoosive so I bought a UE48H6400. The tv itself is only marginally bigger with a much bigger picture due to the very small bezel now found on modern sets. It's an excellent picture by the way, and not even 4k.
Installed the tv and the mrs said, is that really 48"? You should have got a 55"!
Moral: get a 55".

No one can advise you how big to go if they have no idea how far away from it you sit.
We went from 50 to 55 inch, made very little difference. Picture quality on the 4K is good.
The modern TVs with no bezel actually look smaller in the room than the old plasma, despite being 5 inches bigger screen.

I have a 8 year old Panasonic TH42PX80b (42 in 720p plasma) and am yet to find something to replace it with. On only ever watch SD content through sky, and it looks so much better on mine than other people's brand new 4k sets
Tesco eBay have some 50in Panasonic plasma as for less than 400 quid at the min. (P50X60 I think)

Bought a 55 inch 4k for 749 at curries. Was only going to buy a standard HD tele but this price seemed madness not to buy the 4k. Pretty sure it's going to be used for the next 5 or 6 years, and the speed at which content availability is changing with fibre broadband spreading is quite astonishing now, so suspect content will come soon.
Mind you OLED looks stunning, but entry level was around £2000.
