Good afternoon,
I want to post this as much to vent steam as well as seeing if anyone else has similar experiences.
My son who has just completed his finals in economics, was offered a post graduate job last year after a 10 week internship with a large bank, He was one of 2 successful out of 6000 applicants. It was to be a dream start to a career.
After the first of his last finals (1 of 6)he received a call from the bank that they had withdrawn the graduate offer with no explanation. As you may well expect he was absolutely devastated resulting in a very depressing and dark last 3 weeks. The company were forthcoming in the end stating it was comments on facebook that resulted in this. As far as I can tell the comments could have been deemed slightly offensive but were not in anyway levelled at the company, and were on his personal account. I put this down to being a 21 year old not quite mature yet, but to be told this news,AND on the first day of his finals, of which they would have known the dates was absolutely brutal. They say there is no appeal.
I have never experienced anyone in recent memory being so low as my son has been, and this may well impact on the results.
Thanks for listening

That sounds really appalling. I have no idea what the content of the Facebook posts was, or how that got them to a position of withdrawing the offer.

Of course from a legal point of view there is no recourse, since he could have had his employment terminated for no reason any time in the first 24 months.

However, It is unfair to treat people this way. I would have though a quick phone call, pointing out that the comments were inappropriate would have done the trick.

The more of this Facebook stories I hear, the more certain I am that staying of it is the best plan.

sorry to hear of this, it's the main reason that i have nothing to do with work on my facebook account.

it's purely personal and nothing to do with them.

i would write a strongly worded letter to the head of their hr dept though asking why they deemed it fit to do it on the first day of his finals though.

i would also think that if they are this petty and unprofessional that he dodged a bullet working for them, having worked for a few over the years some amaze me they make any money as the back end seems to be running on gaffer tape and goodwill.

hope he gets what he wants results wise and climbs out soon

How would they know it was the first day of his finals?

I have had similar but not over facebook, back then it wasn't as public as it is now and you had to have a university email to even sign up! I had a job lined up for the end of my time at university when I started my final year. I interviewed with them and they offered to pay my final years tuition on account I come work for them for a minimum of 2 years. It was in Oil and Gas and I was stoked.

Took a lot of pressure off the final year. Whilst others fretted about applying to grad schemes and going to interviews in the final months when there was also course work and exams to do, I didn't have to worry. 2 Days after my final exam, "sorry we cannot take you any more". Gutted. The economy had just tanked and they explained that they couldn't very well take on a new guy whilst they were sending others home and the remainders where scrabbling around for work to do.

That late in the day I didn't have many grad job options left. Took what was going. Hated it. Decided to wait out the economic downturn by returning to uni to do a PhD. Enjoyed it very much and I am not really much behind my friends who now have 5-6 years experience in terms of earnings.

My advice is, as much as that sucks to be cut loose before you've even begun, is just to chalk it up as one of those things and go look for something else. He'll find something no sweat. Not the end of the world. Wouldn't want to work for a company who is sniffy over nonsense posted on FB anyway. That or they've found someone better/they want more/bosses child and needed any old excuse to boot your son out.

You mean that website on the internet where you have a profile that can be read by all? A bit like PH?

That is the real world though, not everything gets sugar coated, 21 is an adult, its not ideal, but you have to live by your actions these days, sounds like he should have sorted out the privacy on his account.

You can set things so that only you and friends can see them and not the public at large. But its essentially still public.

Yes, thanks for that. I was hinting that his profile was open to the public.

It doesn't have to be work related to cause you problems.

Mine doesn't show anything other than my profile picture to anyone who isn't friended. Can't even get into the profile to see basic information. Everyone should have theirs like this by default imo.

In fact mine doesn't even come up on a Google search with 'name facebook'. You can set it so that it is removed from google searches.

Nope - said this on the bus driver thread, I have absolutely no idea why people use Facebook (or indeed forums such as this one) in their real names. You could even be in trouble for being in the wrong crowd.

we wear too much on the internet and too much information is available out there - companies are terrified of bad press and will often go through everything that they can before hiring an employee - and even when you are working for them if you draw the company directly or even by association then it could be curtains for an employee...

The backlash against fb has started people are getting more and more wary of posting info for this fact. it can and it does come back to haunt you in time.

How do you control what other people might post about you on their Facebook (or other social media platform) page?

It's all well and good putting on as many locks and restrictions on what you can post but your "mates" may not be as careful.

You can stop anyone being able to tag you, ergo you could then deny they are talking about you if pushed.

What happens if a friend of yours posts up a picture from their camera/phone on their social media pages but YOU are referenced and shown perhaps behaving in an embarrassing way. What power have you got to have that picture and/or comments taken down?

What happens if that picture is used to have you kicked out of a job - or eliminated from a job application process?

You took all the precautions you thought were necessary bot others didn't.

Untag yourself. They cant re-tag you more than once I think.

If they know what you look like and see the picture before you untag it then tough I suppose.
