I'm not seeing the wood for the trees................

3000M with twin fans wired into one Type B relay.

Currently (don't ask madfurious) there are:

two connections to pin 86 (black and a red with black tracer)
one connection to 87 (front pin of relay) (red)
no connections to pin 30
no connections to 87a (centre pin of relay)
on short connection from pin 85 in black to a "piggy back" female spade and from this runs a red

In the vicinity of the relay there is also a cable with female spade one end and to earth (chassis bolt) at the other. The cable length would easily allow this to connect to the relay.

If I connect the "piggy back" to pin 30 then the fans operate permanently and the majority of the dash instruments do not work.

There is no (known) fan override switch.

I just need to ensure the fans are working to safely move her 30 miles (without having to hitch up the trailer) to spend time with a well known expert.

All help gratefully received..........it must be simple rotate

Thanks

Usual relay wiring would be as follows :-

Pin 85 = Earth/Ground

Pin 86 = 12v ignition/switched live

Pin 30 = Fused +12v supply sufficient to run connected device

Pin 87 = Switched +12v output (to fans) when +12v applied to Pin 86

Pin 87a = Switched +12v output when no supply on Pin 86 (unusual to use this in fan circuit normally only a 4 pin relay 85,86,30 & 87)

it is not uncommon in TVR wiring and fan temp circuits in general for things to be switched earth, so quite possible for the earth supply to go through the otter (fan switch) and supply the earth to Pin 85 when the otter switch reaches the desired temp.
