Is it wise to post your entire V5 online?
Discussion
While idly browsing ebay for cars I love but will never own yesterday, I found an iconic car for sale.
Amongst the numerous photos there were a decent handful of the V5 showing - in clear detail - the model spec, year of registration, previous owners, current owner and address etc. All intentionally photographed to be legible for the purpose of showing the car's history and authenticity.
A thought occurred; how feasible would it be for someone to make a note of all this info and apply to the DVLA for ownership?
I've intentionally left the specific car details out in case the above is technically possible and some ne'er-do-well is now scurrying off to ebay to find it.

You could send a V62 (I think) off to the DVLA for any vehicle in the country to try to get a V5 in your name, but they do try to track down a current owner or keeper for a couple of months before they issue one. None of the details on a V5 would really be required for the V62 form anyway. No idea how any could use that info via the DVLA to try to gain ownership.
The only risk I see is the address if it is a particularly valuable car, but he might not even keep it there.

DVLA state (on the V62) that you must supply the VIN or the form will be returned. The only risk I see is the address if it is a particularly valuable car, but he might not even keep it there.
But even if you do get a V5C, all it does is make you liable for paying the bills - it doesn't transfer ownership.

VIN Number is clearly shown in the photos too.
As has been pointed out, I completely forgot the V5 doesn't prove ownership.
could be used to clone though to flog a stolen car?As has been pointed out, I completely forgot the V5 doesn't prove ownership.
