Yes there was. DVLA used to allow 14 days to display the paper based one to allow for postage etc and police would not enforce during that time.

Not for not having tax, just for failure to display. Now there's no offence of failure to display so it's all good smile

Correct, but only for display, not for purchase. As display is no longer required the grace period no longer exists.

Yes, but you had still paid for it, I assume the OP is asking if you can have a grace period before renewing, ie "I'm a bit skint but I'm being paid in a week, can I pay for it then"

Yes you did still have to pay for it but at the time, there was no enforcement if you didn't pay for it within the 14 days either and police wouldn't take action if you hadn't in that time.

So technically.. An unofficial grace period.

That's an awful justification - LOL!

If you drove past one of the DVLA tax cars that sometimes sit on the side of the road, you'd still get a ticket i.e. no grace period.

I completely missed my tax renewal in April as I put the document in a 'safe place' and it then slipped my mind.

Then my OH got caught speeding in my car about 2 days after tax had expired but by a camera rather than an officer. I found the letter about the 8th April and immediately went online and taxed it and it was backdated to the 1st of the month.

There was no come back on the lack of tax at the time of the speeding offence. I have now made my safe place also a sensible place so that I wont forget for any of the cars again.

You would now yes but before the paper version went, you wouldn't of been issued a ticket in the 14 day period.

Depends upon the copper, what they've checked and how lenient they feel.
But, quoting the gov.uk website (https://www.gov.uk/government/news/vehicle-tax-changes) "From 1 October [2014], when you buy a vehicle, the vehicle tax will no longer be transferred with the vehicle. You will need to get new vehicle tax before you can use the vehicle."
So if they clock you they can do you for driving without tax.

Along the same lines - I've just remembered that the tax ran out end of May on one of my cars. Today I renewed it online, paid by card. Am I likely to get fined for this?

Car hasn't been used in the meantime, although it has been parked on the road. Pretty sure it hasn't been picked up by anpr or anything. An online enquiry reports it as untaxed, and states that it can take 5 days to update. So even though it's now taxed is it safe to use, or will it ping ANPR (I believe the database in plod cars only gets updated every few days or so anyway?). I've printed out a copy of the website and email renewal confirmations to keep in the car, just in case. Not sure there's anything more I can do now?

Just tax it!

If you get stopped they will most likely fill out a DVLA form and the DVLA will then charge you the missing dates and also fine you for failing to tax the car. If the car is 2 months + 2 days out of tax, then the police will seize the vehicle.
