I've just been asked to fit a Category 5 tracker to the new truck. I've fitted the Brand "TRACKER" before but I'm unhappy about their battery policy. Basically when the battery runs out they charge you £100 to come and change it.

I took out their life time contract up for a one off payment to find out it wasn't quite kosher. The battery ran out and they charged me a oner to change it, so i'm a bit reluctant to have their kit again.

Whats are my options?

As far as I'm aware of Tracker, as long as you keep your car battery connected and fully charged, the Tracker battery should last quite a while as it's only a back up for if/when the battery is disconnected.

The question is, how much do other branded trackers charge to change a battery?

Mine has a Cobra Trak which has now called Vodafone cobra trak renewal came through today, when I called them I asked them to check it was working ok, they said it is automatically checked once a month and I would get a text message if it was faulty.

I am unsure if it is a cat 5 I just called them but missed office hours, I used to have the option where you can track it yourself on your phone or pc which I think was £225 per year, but decided to drop the web option and now its £145 per year

I'm looking at a Cobra Track 5 which I think has been taken over by Vodafone?

Anyone have any experience of these, good or bad?

Here's the unbiased list from Thatcham, if you haven't already found it. You want page 81 for the manufacturers. smile

My GTR has a SmarTrack Protector Pro which is Cat 6 (TQA 208) though they also have Trident (TQA 104).

http://smartrack.eu/product_range/protector_pro.ph...

When I got it set up with them they could even tell my journey start and stop times, how many miles I covered etc...all very big brother.

Thanks Gary. I think cat 5 is higher than cat 6 though. Talk about big brother? There is one system which allows them to turn the engine off too. Imagine a glitch arming that when your not ready for it?

Cobra have been okay for us. They ring us a couple of times a year when we forget to carry the fob. We ring them a couple of times to let them know the car is disappearing into the Chunnel.

Have only replaced fob batteries so far.

and your speed possibly, may as well have one of those blasted insurance boxes which tracks your driving style. No doubt in the event of an accident this information would be avialble to third parties to look at....

Gareth, if I were you I'd find another insurer and purchase a private tracking devise if YOU want one fitted.

Might be worth giving them a call to get them to check it, when you went to LeMans on the train did it activate the tracker ? if it was locked and on the train it should have gone off or does it know your on a train?

According to thatcham 7 is highest so 6 must be higher than 5

I have a smart track system, had it in for 6 yrs on a lifetime purchase.

Great bit of kit, they call me when the dealers disconnect the battery, or when the car is on a unfamiliar route, they called me when I was queuing for the channel tunnel once asking if I was with the car as it was about to leave the uk, great service though.

I have a Scorpion fitted, costs about £100/year.
You can also set up a text alert if you car is started & you can check the cars location on a computer or ipad
