Garmin mapping for Crete?

I am going for a family holiday to Crete in August and will be taking my bike.

I have a Garmin 800 and would like to have access to Crete maps. I have had a look on the web and found it difficult to work out if I can get/use open source maps. I also cant find a definitive answer to which maps definitely cover what. My searches have thrown up a few false positive results for answers.

Can anyone here please help? I may be being a numpty but I can't seem to sort it myself

Thanks chaps. I have had an email back from handtec saying that Garmin Europe city navigator maps cover Crete so I have that to fall back on should I be too dim to work it out.

I would seriously suggest you reconsider taking your bike to Crete in August!!! I was there for a family holiday last August, and took my helmet, shoes and shorts with the intention to hire a bike whilst there.

They all stayed in our hotel room for the entire fortnight, as riding would've been bloody horrible given the heat and humidity! I was changing T-shirts twice a day just walking around, they were getting so sweaty, and the sand on the beaches was painful to walk on.

It may well be that we had unusually hot and/or humid conditions, but there was no suggestion locally that this was the case.

Thanks for the heads up, I will take that on board. I don't mind heat but coupled with high humidity....

However, I have very recently done some long and very climby bike rides near Marbella with only UK spring and UK climbing as acclimatisation. I hope Summer cycling here stands me in equally good stead. Maybe famous last words

We go there every two years as my partner's family is from Crete. I spend all my time in the water or looking for air con. We'll be there in Aug so will keep my eyes open - what colours do you wear ?

From the sound of it I will mostly be wearing whatever they provide in A&E

But seriously, I have checked the averages for Chania in August and the humidity and temperature are within 2% and 2 degrees of last week's figures for Marbella.

Chania is on the coast though. Have you checked inland conditions without the sea to cool you?

Good luck ! If it gets too hot, get into the hills where it's a few degrees cooler. We'll be in Paleochora, which is my favourite town. Visit it if you can, spanakopita and an ice cold mythos on the beach !
