Curious Electric Conundrum

Woke up this morning feeling all keen and eager, so I decided to actually do something instead of just looking at it shaking my head and going back inside to find something else to do
I picked the courtesy light switches in the doors as they have never worked…
Drivers side all sorted in 15mins, woohoo
Passenger side (feeling all confident now) no wires ! OK I’ll have a root around see what I can find, couple of min later… found them… but what’s this I spot, a brown/white wire spliced into the white/purple feed wire, looks home cooked (to be fair it all looks home cooked) so I decide to follow it… and it goes to…
Pin 30 (I think) on the ECU ? takes a look on google which seems to indicate that this is the pin for ‘Automatic Transmission Position’ now maybe I’m being really thick or missing some fundamental understanding here, but this makes no sense to me at all
Do the enlightened masses have any ideas, or wild speculations even ?
Ps. I think it’s Pin 30 as there is also a brown/white in Pin 31 going to the canister purge valve thing in the engine bay (it’s a S3C so has one of these) and Pin 30 is on the other side to it
