OK Collective, we're 2 weeks into ownership of a 09 V8 Vantage - Sportshift.

Just gone to move it and it won't start. frown

I am Doing:

Unlock Car
Key depressed all the way in (I've used both keys)
Dashboard goes through usual checks.
Lights that remain illuminated are Oil/Engine/Brake (Which is correct?)
Gear display shows 1 - Press footbrake and press Neutral button
Gear display now shows N
Keep foot on footbrake and depress key again to start.

Nothing....

Have tried putting it in Neutral using Footbrake on and both levers pull backwards. Still nothing.

What am I doing wrong please?

On my DB9 I put in Park in the garage. Then on starting insert key ,turn on ,watch display, then push the button.
I then put my foot on brake to put it in gear.

Welcome.
Please post photos of your new car.
Only then do you get the full welcome and compliments.

My car is manual, so unfamiliar with some of the starting procedure that you describe.
There is one aspect where I sometimes encounter this problem.
Key depressed fully seems to occasionally 'muddle' the electronics.

Try pressing the key partly in (just far enough to begin the system check) then wait for the illumination to change from white to red. Then fully depress the key fob (Emotion Control Unit). Hopefully, your emotions will remain under control, and the engine starts.

Once the key is in if you don't start it straight away I've found you have to take the key out and try again. It's as if (and possibly is) an immobiliser that only gives you a short time window to start it. Get in, foot on brake, key in and straight away push to start. It will put itself in neutral.

What colour does the light go?

That is excellent, Stephen, and I know that you always like to help.

Slight problem though, for OP.
2009 cars do not have a key, or a button.

Congratulations Jon - You win the internet!

Push the key in, retract about halfway and push in again - Red light and engine start!

A slight detail young man...........

I knew when posting that I would be better sticking with the usual trivia and pointless banter I usually contribute.frown

When we say key we mean emotional control unit?

Anyway... Take key out completely and when you put it back in go for it, don't hang around. I had a similar experience when I first bought the car much to the amusement of my friends.

It's been a while since I've had the opportunity to stick anything into an emotional control unit.frown

I had similar issue. http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=28&...

There are supposed to be two 'methods' to start.
1. Put ECU into position II, press with two flat fingers until ECU flush with bezel, bezel light turns red, depress further, car starts
2. single finger (not joking) push ECU all the way in in one movement until car starts

I always liked the tiny bit of theatre with the red light, but I ran into issues with the car not starting at the most inconvenient times. Car had a history of this before I bought it. Replaced all batteries and ECU (under warranty) no difference. New ECU made it slightly better. Ended up replacing the bit the ECU goes into...problem solved..*but* I now use method 2 all the time as it is more reliable. Still once every 20 or so starts the bezel does not turn red and the car wont start..method 2. 100% reliable.

hope this helps

Mine seems to get confused easily. If I make a mistake and push in without my foot on the clutch or leave it too long before pushing all the way in, thats it, it refuses to turn red on any of the next attempts. From then on the only way to start is to push all the way in which is described in the handbook as 'quick start'. When I start it now I make a point of being 100% ready for the red. biggrin

We do wink

Tried this approach and it works too.

Thanks all for your assistance!

Hello all, I've just had a couple of things happen with my '08 V8V sports shift that's giving me concern but, with any luck, it may be relatively simple issue. Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated!

1. Over the past few days the engine has tuned over more times than usual before kicking into life
2. The other day, the start button went from red to white whilst I was pressing it and therefore car didn't start. Or else the car would turn over once and then button would turn to white again....eventually she started normally.
3. On occasion after reversing, when I press 'D' it doesn't work so I have to go into first gear using paddles.

Things I have done;

1. I've been through the full clutch learn process and I wait for the click every time I drive the car.
2. New key fob battery

Could it be related to a degrading car battery at all?

Thanks so much!

Holy thread resurrection!

I would certainly get the battery checked (It's underneath the parcel shelf behind the drivers seat btw)

Do you know how old it is?

Out of interest, please tell us what was the solution to your original problem?

I am amazed just how long some batteries seem to last now.
My OEM Vantage battery was 8 years old when changed, and even then it was still working normally.
On another car, I am now replacing a battery after 11 years.

I think I was just being overly cautious - This cured it and it's not been an issue since.

Push the key in, retract about halfway and push in again - Red light and engine start!

(I think with batteries it can depend how the car is used - Daily or weekends etc)

Thanks,

Not sure how old the battery is but I haven't changed it since I bought it 3 years ago. I'm in the middle east where summer temps are +50 so batteries here do work hard.

But do you think if it was the battery I'd have issues with door locking etc?
