Subwoofer in semi detatched house?
Discussion
I was thinking of adding a subwoofer to my home cinema setup (currently a 3.0 system, used for a mix of music and TV/film) but being a considerate chap, I'm worried about the effect it may have on my neighbours.
My house is a 1960s red brick house so much better than say in a new build, but I'm conscious that the sub would be on the wall that adjoins to the next door neighbours living room.
Is it a bad idea? The house next door is empty at present but I know it's being moved into in a couple of weeks and the last thing I want to do is annoy the neighbours unnecessarily!
Cheers

In my last house i just went round and asked them. Cranked it up to a level i would rarely have it to and they let me in to survey the situation. Turns out it could barely be heard and they appreciated the gesture.
Maybe i'm just weird but i usually post a card into my immediate neighbours houses when i first move in somewhere with my contact details and a note to say if i'm making to much noise, etc to give me a phone. No-one ever has and i'd rather a friendly phone call than the police kicking my door down or some council jobsworth round with a noise meter coming round.

Mine is semi-detached and when I set my decks up in the dining-room (classy I know), I went next door and asked them if they could hear it.
"Of course we can!" Was the reply, followed by "Turn it up!"
They said they love having a neighbour like me playing my music like I do, they love noise, but they hardly make any?

Reminds me when my neighbour (a few houses ago) got himself a large sound system with a sub
I had to go round and let him know the pictures had fallen off my adjoining wall...In fact, despite the houses being 60's built and pretty solid, he could barely have it cranked up above the minimum before the noise became too intrusive in my house.

A decent sub, setup properly should blend into the sound system, and should just strengthen up the bottom end. On that basis, I would say the volume level of the sub should match the rest of the sound, not dominate it. If it is at that level, I guess the volume of the 3.0 system would be an indicator of any potential issues with adding a sub. No complaints so far, would be a good sign. However, bass does travel, a hell of a lot. When I had a garden party a good few years back, I had a pair of 18" sub running, and whilst the dance floor was great, and the neighbours did not complain, a couple from a house in another street came over shouting about noise complaints etc. A beer soon settled things down.
That's the reason I bought a detached house, now I enjoy 2 subs in my lounge without bothering anyone (...well except the resident long-haired general). In my old semi, my neighbours found my REL strata quite intrusive which was frustrating to me, and no matter how low I set it, they could still hear the 'occasional explosion' in action films.

This. My moronic neighbour got a surround sound system just before Xmas, when it is on the bass comes through the wall (mine is 1969 as well). Difference is he doesn't do discussion (I think they used to live in a caravan with Dags if you get what I mean) so we've had conflict on & off ever since.I had to go round and let him know the pictures had fallen off my adjoining wall...In fact, despite the houses being 60's built and pretty solid, he could barely have it cranked up above the minimum before the noise became too intrusive in my house.
