2.5 weeks ago I woke up with a bad wrist (ok stop sniggering at the back). There was no falls, twists etc, the only thing I could think of was that I had slept badly on it.

Anyway it got gradually worse over the next 24hrs, I couldn't move it and it was excrutiating to open or close my hand.

I ended up in casualty, who prodded and poked it, xrayed it (for some reason) and came to the conclusion that they didn't know what was the problem. However strapping in the form of a splint helped the ache and stopped much of the movement that was creating most of the sharp pain.

After 5 days or so I could open and close my hand ok, but the dull ache was still there and was exacerbated by use of the wrist.

2.5 weeks later I still have the dull ache, and sharp pain (not as much as before) when I use it suddenlty.

Although I have struggled for the past week without the splint/strapping I have put it back on for the past few days cos thats the only way I get relief from the ache. the sharp pain I can deal with by simply avoiding such activity, but the aftermath of careful use/the occasional sharp pain is the ache.

Ok now the question. Do I keep wearing the splint/strapping for a while (which If I do it too long I assume will weaken my wrist) or do I persevere with the ache?

If I keep it strapped - for how long? before I should worry.

It may sound unlikely, but I fancy your first thought was correct - you slept on it 'badly'.
I base this on my experience of having very painful fingers. They ached all the time and were quite painful, especially if any pressure was applied.
Nothing was obviously 'wrong', they just hurt.
Turns out I'd been in the habit of lacing my fingers behind my head when I went to sleep, flexing and stretching the joints. I think I'd been doing it for years before it caused trouble.
It took several weeks at least to stop hurting and months to go back to normal.

Did something awful to my wrist when climbing. Dynoed leading to something popping in my wrist. Silly, really. Anyway, took over a year before I felt no pain because I kept taking the support off and kept climbing. This was about 10 years ago and it's fine now.

Had something very similiar- turned out it was arthritis and subsequently had an op to remove the trapezium bone.

did it come on suddenly? Can't you see arthritis on an xray?

yep- I woke up in pain, went to minor injuries clinic and they gave me a splint and thought it was tendinitis. Had no previous problems. Not sure about showing on X-rays - I gues if they are looking for it maybe there, but my consultant said it was worse than he thought after the op compared to the X-ray

cheers for the replies

So back to the original question.

Am I helping or hindering the healing process by keeping the strapping/splint on.

Until you know what the problem is I don't think anyone can answer that question.
