Are there any respectable maxedup lads who genuinely do look after their cars, seeking the best performance upgrades and maintenace with what little money they have? Im sure I read right here on PH, that they do in fact exist.

I know a few guys with tarted up Puntos who are real petrol heads. they just like their cars, make them look better with mods in their opinion and can't afford the insurance premiums on TVRs etc.

It's why i don't bother getting into the "maxxers are a bunch of twats" discussions... as its just a stereotype.

When I was at Uni I was lucky enough to have a 1.4 xs 205 given to me by my mum. I spent a good couple of years installing a tasteful (I.e. only speakers on parcel shelf evidence) , yet fantastic sound system and upgrading it to a 1.9 gti spec, i.e. wheels, lower bumpers, trim etc. The main reason for this was that when I looked at buying a real one the insurance was £4500 at the time, the same price as the car. I did add some engine mods, K&N, splitfires, straight though alu exhaust system, which may have added a couple of ggs but not as lot. Fact is I wanted a GTI. A couple of years later I bought a PUNTO GT Turbo, and did nothing to it as I was happy with it as standard. Maybe if these guys could actually buy a decent car in the first place then they wouldn't waste there money on trying to make it look like what they want. But I only spent around a £1000 using breakers yards. I don't understand these guys who spend £10k on a 2K car!

Ive just read your post, and am about to read the replies. what you say is very true, and if it lavishing their car with attention keeps them out of trouble, helps them make friends and learn about cars in general good for them. Their age brings enthusiasm, a standard Nova will never be exciting, and if a 'better' bodykit does the trick so be it

There will always be chavs to be liked and disliked, as with anything in the world. I recon the point is not to criticize until youve walked a mile in his shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and hey, you also have his shoes!
