Good morning,

Looking to lose some weight from the suspension area of the race car and noticed the rear brake disc / drive flange assembly is rather heavy all things being considered on in relation to the rest of the components.

One option is to go 2 piece disc which I am looking into however the splined drive flange which the drive shaft is bolted to and subsequent driven wheel is rather heavy. The item I am referring to is linked below from the Caterham website.

I'm wondering if there are any light weight versions of this component however also realise that it need to be strong enough to be able to transmit the torque required.

Appreciate the help and advice in advance.

Cheers

The strength of the spline is a product of the diameter, length and material so changing the material or height of the flange is out. The spigot centralises the wheel so that stays. The thickness of the flange also provides the required thread engagement for the disc securing bolts so there's not really a saving to be had there.

You could, I suppose, quite easily square the flange off about the wheel studs which might save 50g?

Without going into some next level non-ferrous alloys and remanufacturing the component, I can't see any sensible way to shed worthwhile weight from that component. I'd suggest that a two piece brake disc would be a much easier solution which would also ease servicability.

Thank you for the explanation the question was more related to if there was a mainstream upgrade available or one this need to be designed and manufactured as a one off piece in an exotic material to save weight.

From your response it looks as though if this route was taken then it would be a custom manufactured item in an exotic material.
