Was just wondering, as I huff and puff trying to build my legs up, squats, calf raises etc and can feel some improvement, mad me realise seeing some of the ladies at work, they have massive calves and comparatively massive thighs, doesn't look like its just fat either.

Can you just have big legs like that and no strength or are they secret Squat Powerhouses ?

When they are standing still sneak up behind them and try to give their calf/thigh a wobble. If it is taut then it is muscle, if it wobbles it is fat.

If you feel this is too much of an imposition you could just ask if they have fat legs.

Some people have big calves, from genetics or other reasons.

My calves are pretty big and although I lift I don't do a lot of bulking specific exercise and no calf isolation. They have always just been that big.

Or he could ask if he can wobble their legs and then exclaim, "ah, fat legs". Any of these options is quite acceptable and well received in the modern workplace.

Calves are luck of the draw IMO. Some people have mega calves and others (like me) have st ones. You can train them three times a week for a year and gain a negligible amount. The effort to reward ratio is ridiculous and so I don't even bother. Just looking at my knees and calves you wouldn't think I trained legs at all even though I can squat 180kg to parallel.

My missus has quite solid (but shapely) legs but she doesnt carry any fat on them, well not a lot.

Suppose it is that size isn't always a guarantee of strength, remember a really geeky looking lad in the gym I used to go to (Walton Park in Sale) which is a real body builders gym (not that I was), not your dapper Dan type place with fripperies like cardio stuff and he looked weedy, me and my mate were bullstting each other into progressively more ridiculous bench press fails and had 100 kilos on the bar, we moved on after mortally wounding ourselves and this lad jumps on and we look at each other wondering if he realises it has 100 kilos on it and how he was about to have it drop on him, bugger only knocks out ten reps double quick, jumps up and adds more weight !

Dan Bilzarian, the playboy bloke, who has a pretty amazing physique was getting stick today for skipping leg day, think it was just an unflattering photograph, you can see quads poking out but that looks just like how his legs are, plus his huge torso makes them look smaller.

The leg day thing seems to be the number one dig at anyone who trains these days.

Not everyone can have legs like a middle aged HR Lady !

Same with mine, she has big strong legs (thighs and calves) made stronger from years of water polo playing. All that egg-beater leg kick. She can squat the same as me and can easily out kick me in the swimming pool.

Size is a funny thing. It can be so counter intuitive. I limber up against some absolutely stacked blokes in the 50 freestyle and 50 fly sometimes and first thoughts are that I will be creamed. Often though, I'm the one doing the creaming (oooerrr). Sometimes though I do indeed get creamed (more oooerr). A lot of it is technique, but until you see them perform, you have no idea how good/how fast/how strong they are just by looking.

There is this kid at our club, 12-13 year old, looks like a bean pole. Not an ounce of fat, barely a shred of muscle. We are sure he does not feel pain or produce lactic acid. Some of the times he can do beggar belief and thats before you consider that the jaw dropping time he just did for the 400 IM comes only 10 minutes after doing an equally jaw dropping time in the 200 Fly just before that!

Theres a girl who goes to my gym, not far off my height, rubber bands for legs. Squats more than I can no sweat. Equally another girl, pretty stocky top and bottom. Again squats more than I can, even looks to have bigger arms than me, but can't do a single pull up to save her life. Big fat bloke, looks so out of shape. Seems like he'd be able to deadlift the whole building.

Appearance it seems, means squat when it comes to how someone will perform. Not sure how we come to think this way. Is it a natural thing or something we've been groomed into thinking. I.e. that the bloke over there with the chiseled abs is really fit and would beat that slightly chubby guy at anything physical.

We have an attractive girl at work who has a massive set of calves.

When she walks they rub together and make a whistling noise when she has tights on.

Not a gym goes as far as I'm aware so just genetic.

And no I don't have pics.

My ex wife's sister was a hotty until she was 16, with a nice set of pins. Then overnight she had calves like Popeye. Not sure what happened, but I think just genetics.

Squats won't primarily give you big calves though...

Yup, and if you squat lowbar/like Rippetoe suggests, you'll not have much quad development either.

Im lucky I guess, huge calves from doing no training other than swimming on them for the past year.

When I used to hockey I would train and sometimes do calf raises just to see how much I could push them, the machine topped out at 250kg, I was able to do that without problems.

Pissed off the body builders who missed out leg days no end.
