We have a gate with a sim card in the receiver. Ring the number from car bluetooth a few seconds before arriving and gate is open when you get there. Numbers need to be on the 'accept' list so only opens for approved people. Can also make outgoing calls from the intercom to home/mobile.

What car do you have? Our Mercedes have the garage door / gate opener installed in the rear view mirror.... it works very well. These are radio controlled.

Mercedes used to use a third party system (they may still use it) called Home Link. Cars specified with the system (it was about £150) had a transceiver in the rear view mirror activated with one of three buttons. It can be retrofitted easily. It is simply a swap of your existing interior mirror for a HomeLink equipped one. Apparently US and UK HomeLink mirrors have different frequencies so be careful if buying used from Ebay. Also RHD and LHD are different, I suspect only that the buttons are on the right on RHD cars and on the left on LHD.

Forget all that mirror home link stuff its the past - get your gate man to whizz a proximity sensor into the area in front of your gate (or both sides if you wish) then get the prox fob and tie wrap it to the underside of the car suitably protected - prepare to wow the Luddite!
