There is a piece on the Range Rover Sport SVR and how it isn't totally rubbish on track. I don't do car trackdays. For those that do them regularly do you see many of these SUVs?

Not regularly, but have seen them.

There was somebody in an X5M once at Snetterton and they were a pain in the arse.

I was in a Supercharged Elise, so was all over them at every corner, but once on the straights instead of pulling over they just booted it and pulled away. Obviously I'd catch them again at the next braking zone / corner.

Given the cost of running one on-track (tyres, brakes, fuel, insurance etc) you'd be stupid not to rent something for the day instead. Way better fun and no more expensive assuming you haven't used man-maths to justify the track day.

But tbh that applies to almost any 'highish value' car.

At least there is *some* enjoyment to be had from thrashing a Lambo/Ferrari/Mclaren etc round a circuit, whereas an SUV is going to be properly dull.

Photo I took a couple of years ago at Castle Combe – they certainly appeared to be having fun.

Yep I was there they were a pain trying to out pace people down the straights, I did however have the legs on them to be able to pass but the Caterhams and the like were really badly held up.

As far as I'm concerned, drive whatever the hell you like so long as you observe the rules. I've taught on many track days and seen great behaviour from people in slow cars and terrible behaviour in fast cars - and vice versa. It's all about the nut behind the wheel, not the car.

Absolutely this, the chap at Snetterton was not obeying the rules.

A lads I saw at Brands in a 2CV were and it was great to watch them going round scrapping the door handle on the ground round every corner, how they didn't throw up is beyond me, it looked like great fun.

There was an X6 on my last track day a few years ago, fortunately it meant that I wasn't the slowest car there!

I saw an E53 4.4i X5 last year at silverstone, as others have said - I'm not really sure what the point is. Slow and expensive confused

I guess to see how fast it could go when pushed hard.

What would be your criteria for a worthy car to be allowed on track, minimum horsepower, maximum weight limit?

I was at a BMW day at Rockingham a few years ago when one of the instructors thrashed an X5 round the track. Boiled its brakes after 3 laps.
