I pulled into the hard shoulder for my junction too early and went under a camera whilst on the hard shoulder. No signs were on it/they were off (no entry or permission to use the lane) but I definitely would have passed under the gaze of the camera.

Do they trigger when anyone is in the hard shoulder, without the ''allowed to use'' symbols on them?

Cheers

If a red X was showing and the gantry had a live working camera then it would have caught you.

The last time I used the M42 about 2 years ago, there were only two live cameras in each direction between M42 J3a and M42 J6,
so there is a good chance you will not have been caught.

I pass through daily and live just off the M42, most people in my village have had the letter from highways about how to use the managed motorway, you'll probably get one in the next few days if you've used the shoulder when it wasn't live

No red 'X' was displayed, the screen was just blank/off.

I had been in the ''live lane'' until it became ''this lane for next junction only''. I moved over and then in a mindless moment after that junction went back onto the hard shoulder for the [my] next junction. Only when I went under the next camera/sign (which was blank) that I realised what I'd done!

Cheers guys

The operation of these cameras is becoming a bit of a mystery. We know they monitor speeds when they are operating in “managed” modes but no-one seems to have come up with a definitive answer as to the tolerances. I was told on a SAC that the ones in the Midlands (at least) are now set to monitor the NSL when not in operation (but the trainer wouldn’t/couldn’t tell us what their tolerance was – I suspect a certain amount of BS following the party line !) and noone seems to know if they are checking on things like what the OP is asking. It’s got to be s deliberate attempt to cast doubt all round.

I know the ones on M4/M5 at Bristol do not flash when on NSL.

Well, put it this way: they don't for me and I've been through there a number of times over the last few months.

Are you saying you got a ticket when the signs were NSL?

Can confirm, they do flash at NSL. When they were new, they were catching a high number of drivers. I saw it a lot when they were newly installed.

In peak times eastbound there is one set which is set to 40MPH and seems to be a right old cash cow as dumbasses fly right through it.

When they were new? What about now? I can confirm that they do not currently flash (not for me anyway) at NSL. Been through there a number of times (including at night when the flash would be very noticeable) at a flashable speeds.

They are about 2 years old now. I think there are only two sets East and westbound. All I am saying is that they seem to have a remarkably low tolerance in peak hours, going by what I have seen.

Fair enough, but I've driven that same stretch of road when NSL in the last couple of months and the cameras have not gone off.

I pass regaulry through the m42 section at around 85-88 when the boards are blank and not been flashed. I thought if you were doing 95+ they will flash you regardless. Always stick to the posted limit if they are on.
