Why is it just about every bloody pile of bricks on the face of the planet with more than one person living in it has a namesake town in the USA?

I’m trying to book flights to Beirut in the Lebanon (as in the place in the Middle East, on the Mediterranean, North of Israel which had a bit of a dodgy rep a few years back ). Can I find anything on expedia or google? Can I f**k.

All I get is trips to the USA. How many towns called Lebanon do you think there are in the USA? Eleven FFS:

Lebanon, New Hampshire
Lebanon, Illinois
Lebanon, Indiana
Lebanon, Ohio
Lebanon, Pennsylvania
Lebanon, Tennessee
Lebanon, Missouri
Lebanon, Kentucky
Lebanon, Oregon
Lebanon, Virginia
Lebanon, New Jersey

Is there a place name in the world they haven’t half inched for themselves

It's because America as a nation only started in 1777, and was occupied mostly by homesick immigrants who used names they knew to help them feel at home.

I quite like the idea of 'New England' - leaving all the crud behind and starting again somewhere nicer

Sorry, a bit late for that move to 'New England'. Unless you want crowded roads, high taxes and an ever-increasing Welfare State, that is.

No, not yet. But you have to have goals, right?

New England is crap if you are from old England.

They seem to love to smear your face in their liberation and live for July 4th if you dare to set foot in their less green and less pleasant land!

One of my ancestors founded a town in Nebraska and named it after his (and also my) family surname so they don't always use other places for ideas

Perhaps it was just the company I was keeping at the time. But I'm not going back there, thanks. Detroit was far more friendly!

It's a small town in Garden County, well when I say town it's more or a village, well small outpost. Population 270, three rather mangy cows, a dachshund named Colin and a small hen in its late 40s.

Hicksville USA. Farming, Hunting, fishing and oil.

But don't want to give my name out on here

Crowded roads? You've never gone farther inland in New England than Worcester, MA. You can't exactly drive for miles without seeing another car, but the roads aren't anywhere near packed - driving's fun here.

High taxes? Massachusetts has lower taxation rates than 39 other USofNA states. We pay 5% in state tax, 9% in Social Security, and between 10 and 35% in federal income tax. There is no VAT - a sales tax of 5% is charged on all but food and clothing.

Ever-increasing welfare state? Nope. We've been cutting welfare rolls for a decade. Of course, there's no safety net left, so when you fall you fall hard... pick your poison carefully.

Despite all the European sourced names in the US, there are thousands of original Native Americasn names too, especially for natural features like rivers and lakes but also towns and cities -

Chatanooga
Missouri
Mississippi
Okeecobee
Adirondaks
Allegheny

I think they are the most beautiful sounding place names anywhere.
