As i've only got 1x key for my Disco i really should buy a spare, but i cannot help but feel that i'm being taken advantage of when they want £235 and then another £90 + VAT to program it.

Do I have any other options? Can i get a key other than from LR? Can an auto locksmith program a key?

Regarding the key programming, my local dealer said it was an hour and 20 minutes work (which i cannot believe) and how he was 'doing me a favour' only charging me £90 + VAT

I do! At least I do for a RRS. I've just had a new key supplied as my previous one was becoming inconsistent in its operation.

Ignoring the cost of the key itself, the programming took half an hour and cost £60 + VAT. They had time to wash and dry the car too.

My key only has three buttons though, so maybe that's where the extra time and cost is coming from. After all, that computer doesn't run the process itself.
Either that or the dealership doesn't have the best approach to retaining customers. Perhaps it would be worthwhile seeking a second estimate elsewhere.

Having spoken to another dealer they said programming would cost 1/2 hour labour charge as this was the shortest time increment they charge (makes sense) even though actual programming is only a 10 minute job.

Original main dealer has subsequently come back to me to say "There is a chance that when pairing the new key it will screw up the ECU and this might need replacing at an additional £450"

So buying a new key, getting it programmed and possibly having to replace the ECU could cost me over £800.................WTF!

Alternatively i could carry on just using 1x key. If i lose it I will be somewhat inconvenienced but my insurance covers me for this eventuality.

Final outcome is that LR have successfully pissed off a customer who won't be buying another of their products.

Good work LR, I'm sure this is what you wanted.

This doesn't sound like a Land Rover issue, more like a dealership issue. Try elsewhere.

Surely there must be alternatives to using LR for a key replacement. I know there are several companies out there who will supply and program a new key for you for much less than a dealer.

I know its a very different car, but I bought a new key for my wife's C-Max and Ford wanted £220 (+VAT all in and I found a local specialist who came to my office and supplied and programmed a new key for £140 all in smile

Its worth hunting about on tinternet smile

That reminds me - when I had a D3, one of the thing that went wrong was that the dealer lost one of my keys - the replaced it OK. A few days after getting the car back, I found the missing key on the floor...
