Think you just had a bad experience. Had lunch at Carluccios in Bristol the other day, 3 meals all good, starters and mains with drinks <£50. Service ok, nothing amazing but food was fine to good.
On the other hand I have had several excellent meals at Bistrot Pierre but the last two were pretty dire, food ok but service truly shocking compared to their normal high standards.

tWent to Carluccios in Stratford-upon-Avon with work and had a fantastic meal. Took OH and her sister to the one in Chichester and spent £140 on what is one of the worst meals ever! Similar experience to yours, especially the tough, overcooked steak!
I complained at the restaurant and their attitude was, basically, "tough, nobody else is complaining!"
I put a scathing review up on Tripadvisor and was contacted by their CEO! I got a full refund and a voucher for a dinner for 3. The return visit was better but, in all honesty, was not of the standard they try to promote!

We went to the Covent Garden outlet for lunch, last December. The simplest of pastas were poor and the wine expensive.
I assumed it was just another franchised unit, with little or no input from Carluccio himself. It is now in the same category as Jamie Oliver's outlets, in my mind. Naf.

Would recommend Brasserie Blanc in Covent Garden. We turned up (family of 4), on a Saturday in the school half term so you can imagine it was stupidly busy.I assumed it was just another franchised unit, with little or no input from Carluccio himself. Spoke with a waitress who promised us a table later in the day if we came back in about an hour which we did.
Spent 10-15 in the bar with a decent bottle of sauvignon for about 25 quid before being offered a table inside or on the terrace which we opted for.
Superb medium burgers and a double steak tartare for me with a few glasses of red.
Really good, staff actually seemed to be interested in looking after customers and the food was good - very good.
My local one in SW London is always packed during the day with Yummy Mummies as well as nannies with their charges and is very busy at night. God knows why as the two times I've eaten there the food has been pants.

Very unimpressed with everything else I've had there and I'll say the same for the two different Jamie's Kitchens that I have eaten at. Over priced rubbish and I swear Jamie wasn't there, in fact he wasn't at 15 when we ate there once, but the food was good that time.

Lol, Zizzi and Ask are the same company just under different names.
Carluccio's? The only thing that separates it from Zizzi and Strada is the clean white decor aside from that it's exactly the same as every other high street Italian restaurant.......Overpriced, bland and un-authentic!
