I currently drive a huge spec 997.1 C4S convertible manual
Am about to start a new job that involves a 100 mile round trip commute, mainly on congested motorways
I can take the wife's Evoque some of the time but was thinking of swapping the 997 for something automatic that is more refined & economical for the odd day here & there and came up with the idea of a Cayman S gen 2 PDK, which I can swap into for not a lot more cash. I like the idea of PDK, the reliable engine, and better fuel economy but am concerned that the PSE would be a bit weedy on the 3.4 DFI compared to the 997 where it is pretty fruity.
Also are they really that much more economical in heavy traffic? And as for the 2.9 engine is that DFI or not, does it still have issues?
Not really interested in anything other than a 997, Boxster or Cayman as I like how the Porsche sports cars look and it's my fun weekend car too

Is a smaller car going to be more refined?

Seems the cost and hassle of changing won't be worth the economy.

A 997.2 C2S would seem like a better move (manual or PDK) or perhaps a turbo.

2.9 gen 2 engine is not dfi and has no known reliability issues.

I had one of these for 3 years from new covering a total of approx. 90,000 miles....great car...always returned at least 30mpg.

Have a test drive in any 987 Cayman first though. They have this weird cabin pressure issue that can effect some peoples ears....I got used to it - no probe with the 981.

I was thinking it would be a bit quieter in there as no soft top
Can't really justify £10k+ to switch to a 997.2 as just bought the Evoque (which is a stunning car btw)
I was thinking the fuel economy should be a fair bit better on the 3.4 DFI on account of smaller engine, DFI and PDK.
Problem with the 2.9 is it is hard to find one with full leather & sports seats which are my must haves
Does the 2.9 have the IMS too?

With a yearly commute of 24,000 miles if you average an extra 5 MPG you will save around a £1,000 per year. How much is it going to cost you to swap? and if you have a car you enjoy why swap into something you may not enjoy as much.

The 2.9 is the new, closed-deck, alusil block, IMS-free engine, just like the 3.4. It shares no major components with the older M97 engine. The only major difference (other than the smaller capacity) between the 2.9 and 3.4 is that the 2.9 is fitted with traditional in-port fuel injection, rather than so-called Direct Fuel Injection that injects fuel straight into the combustion chamber.

Agree. My Boxster is quieter than my Turbo. Part of it is due to the difference in wheels/tires. The Boxster: 17"; the Turbo: 18". But the soft top cars are more softly sprung than the coupes. As a result the coupes are noisier/harsher riding cars.

A plus in traffic is the view out of my Turbo is better than out of my Boxster with the Boxster's top up. Anymore I never drive with the Boxster's top down.
