Recently had mot done so the car is finally on the road! Now need to start work on restoring it's looks and paintwork is my major issue.

Basically the paintwork over the whole car needs a bit of tlc and I've included photos to show what i mean.

Not sure the best way to combat this as had a number of different suggestions but not a clear answer and thought this would be the best place to come, just wanna try and restore this to the best possible condition without a respray or spending mega bucks.

Hi mate...I have similar..Its the lacquer thats broken down..There are a few options...

1. A complete respray..3-5K
2. Re-lacquer..Up to £1,000
3. Wrap but will have join lines..£???
4. Plasti-dip any colour or effect £500-800

You can try colour magic...Clay bar....G3...Meguiars...Or any other product with claims of magically restoring your paint work but in reality there are only the 4 options above...Im going to give the Plasti-dipping a go at some point as its a D.I.Y product for under £500...You just need space and a compressor..And a good nights sleep the day before to avoid any hair of the dog moments...Having just over half a brain helps...But its not mandatory...smile

Cheers...Ziga

If it was me id pick a section and sand off the remaining clear coat. Then I'd get a rattle can of clear and spray the section.
If that came up ok you might get away with just getting the clear redone.

It's worth a try but a proper re spray looks the most likely.

Blimey Zig! Who do you have in mind for a respray? Rolls Royce?

My guy here in North London will respray the whole car for 1K providing there is no body damage. I would have to ask him about peeling lacquer but I dont think it's a problem. I've used him many times with exellent results. Just take a look at his recent work on my Wedge.

Like i said mate...Depends on what plans are for the car..Budget..blabla

£1,000 for a "Blow over" is about right...I call it that because they haven't removed the pods..Sprayed door shuts and inner pillars/Faces..Engine bay..etc...

Lacquer can be re-applied for anything from £400...Sections can be blown in..Then there is prep work...For a full respray including prep you are talking in excess of 3K...If it were a roller mate then that would just about cover the primer...You thought TVR tax was high..smile

Im only going to give the plastic-dip a bash cos its relatively easy but if i naff it up i can peel it off and start agin..The paint is cheap but the effect is amazing...If it last's for 2 years then its a result...You could spend thousands on a paint job and get it scratched by a jealous moron while you pop into the newsagents for a lucky dip cos you feel lucky..At least with the plastic they will have to untangle their key from it which gives me ample time to give them a cauliflower earhole...That alone is worth £500...laugh

It's true they don't remove the pods and do the door shuts but in all honesty most cars don't need that, unless your car is in a right state. The only time I would have that done is if I was having a colour change. That aside, I can assure you the car is fully sanded and prepared. These guys are passionate about their work and get excellent results. It's your money mate, but I wouldn't go overboard because at the end of the day it's a car that will be on the road most of the time and like you say it could get damaged or scratched etc. My brother was so impressed with their work he had his Rolls Royce sprayed there. ( or in your terms blown over). He was over the moon with the result but they did charged him a lot more for a Roller.(well, just the sheer size? It's enourmous.)

Personally I dont like plastic dipping. The finish just doesn't look right to me, but if that's what you like, then go for it. I'd be interested in seeng the finished result.

Okay i get the picture now you don't have to go over board...hehe

Well it is essentially a "Blow over"..Or better still a "Blow job"..But that is a realistic price for a good one, I would be dubious of anything less unless it was a friend doing a massive favour!....Im not going to spend fortunes on my paintwork as she lives outside so a cheaper option might be tried..But not before i have sorted out the suspension on mine and a few other bits and bobs...

Hi Tony...Im still sceptical about it as nothing beats a good shine on a Wedge...
https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=...

I might at some point look into getting the lacquer re-sprayed but will have to have the boot sprayed as its awful at the moment..Most of my lacquer is blistering on the boot and rear quarter and is scabby on the passenger door and peeling around the windscreen pillars...As a rule car covers can damage the paint and i think at some point in Poppy's life she has had cheap car covers on...
Even though the one that i have from Howlfrauds is relatively cheap i have a fleece one under it..I have a good friend who had the lacquer done on his and it looked like a new paint job...Providing the paint is good underneath i guess it would do....Cheers...Ziga

That's a good deal, my Tasmin was resprayed in about 1998 and it cost me £800 then. Didn't add £800 to the value of the car when I came to sell it though... wink

The guy did a good job: here it is just a few years ago...

Tony. Cheers got it. I will at some stage give him a call. I fully agree sbout the cost. To spend 3000
On a car that spends most of its time locked away makes no sense.

Zig. When you are ready, you can give me a shout and I'll send you details of my spray guys. You can then drive down to them when you have time and show them your car. These guys are very friendly and like to offer customers something to suit their pocket. I know they do complete resprays for 1k where you don't have to touch anything, but they may offer you something else. For instance you could tell them that you'll chip in with the preparations or something along those lines. I wouldn't like to speak on their behalf but I know they are helpful and may find you a solution to fit your pocket when you are ready. It's your money mate, only you can decide. I'm just tying to help you so as you can turn Poppy into a bird magnet it once was, once again.
