I've volunteered to provide a punch for my neighbours bbq on Saturday, what are your recommendations? I'd like it to have plenty of kick (none of this going easy nonsense) but not harsh at the same time- anyone can concoct a bowl of wince potion.

Cheeky Vimto is dead easy, bottle of port, cheapo asda will do and two ltr bottles of WKD blue. Make sure it's nice and cold and it goes down far too easy

Rum punch.

1 measure of lime juice, freshly squeezed
2 measures of sugar syrup - you can make or buy this. Pretty sure I've seen bottles in the larger Tesco's recently
3 measures of dark rum - Cockspur will do for a punch - tends to be reasonably priced in Sainsbury's
4 measures of water
Dash of Angostura Bitters and freshly grated nutmeg

For the syrup put two measures of sugar in a saucepan with a little water and cook until the sugar has dissolved and add to the juice.

Serve with plenty of ice.

I like a good dollop of Angostura, enough to change the colour a darker shade.

Very strong, very easy to drink.

One of sour, two of sweet, three of strong and four of weak, a dash of bitters and a sprinkle of spice, serves well chilled with plenty of ice.

Rum Punch

Serves 6-8

500ml good-quality dark rum
150ml sugar syrup
150ml freshly squeezed lime juice
100ml freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
500 ml freshly squeezed orange juice
1 and half tbsp Angosturra bitters
1 tbsp grenadine syrup

To Serve
ice cubes
grated fresh nutmeg
orange slices
maraschino cherries

1. Combine all the punch ingredients in a large jug, stirring well.
Add more sugar syrup, if desired.

2. Strain the punch to remove any pulp and serve over ice (or chilled) with a generous sprinkle of grated nutmeg and a speared cocktail stick of sliced orange and maraschino cherry.
