Hello all,

I"m looking to upgrade my 5 year old 500d which has served me well - and still continues to do so. I want to upgrade as I think that the more up to date camera's offer a higher pixel count keeping within the CMOS size sensor, more AF points and faster auto focus and FPS.

I have a Canon external flash and two lenses - a Canon 50mm (I think) that came with the kit when I bought and a Sigma 28-210mm zoom which I pretty much keep on the camera all the time. I also have a x2 converter which I will use occasionally in conjunction with a tripod.

I do not use the auto mode or the programmed modes. I use one of the manual modes in conjunction with light metering in the view finder depending on light condition and where I am (indoors, outdoors etc).

Mostly use the camera for holidays, cars (car shows and racing) and airshows.

I do not do and have no interest in after shot processing (e.g. Lightroom, Photoshop etc) so what comes out of the camera is what I use.

From what I have read - the new Canon 760d is comparable to the Nikon D5500. Obviously I will need to change my lenses and flash - but the Nikon seems to have a slightly larger CMOS sensor, longer battery life, more AS points and higher ISO capability than the 760d.
However the 760d would mean I could keep my current lenses and flash, be a menu system / features / functionality I am used to, and apparently offer a better faster AF for moving pictures.

My wife is a semi-professional photographer (specialising in pet photography) and uses a Nikon D750 which she absolutely loves. I have handled it a few times and find it far to complex for me. So I'm err-ing on the side of the Canon.

Have any other Canon owners moved to Nikon - or any other 500/550d owners upgrade to a D5500 or Canon 750d/760d ?

Many thanks

If you're used to Canon I would probably stick with it (unless you can pinch Nikon lenses from your Mrs of course wink )

I recently upgraded from a 550D to a 70D. Mainly because i can still use all the lenses i've collected in the last few years and i couldn't justify starting again.

The 70D is a great bit of kit and good upgrade from the 500/550.

As above, but I went from a 400D to the 70D. Quite a big jump in performance, features and image quality. Wifi with the phone app is handy as a remote trigger; LiveView is great for manual focussing as you can zoom in a lot; rear screen tilts which is good for shooting from low/high positions, video is 1080HD with good AF tracking judging from limited use (I don't do much video work).
