Porsche 996 C4

Never been the greatest 996 fan but when this came along I put prejudice to one side and realised they are utter bargains. The looks are growing on me... Even the lights! It's no 997 but black with black interior flatters it far more than most colours...

Don't the early 996 have a tendency to catastrophically ejaculate oil out the rear end resulting in life extinct.

They do have a habit of catastrophically ejaculating oil out from the back of the engine, yes. But not if they've had the correct IMS bearing upgrade - which this one has, luckily.

It's more cracked cylinder liners I'm worried about!

I have to agree , I bought a C4 from Phil Raby and I absolutely love it ,it's had all the desirable bits done to it by the previous owner and ,for the money , is an incredible car

I've only had my '98 3.4 C2 for 2 months but have fallen in love already!

Great steering feel & lovely noise & fast enough, since it only weighs 1300kg.

Best thing, it really does feel like a proper 911.

01 C4 - FSH with IMS upgrade and immaculate - hard to resist! Hadn't been looking for another car but I'd always hankered after a 911. Not wanting to sell my Z4M and use that towards a Gen 2 997, when I saw this 996 locally, I though it was worth a punt! It's so smooth and refined compared to the Z, and the - for want of a better word - breeding shines through. It just feels so well honed, with none of the raw and rough edges of the Z... I do love cars that are defined by their engines... and although the first water-cooled flat 6 in the 996 is the poor relation, it's a pretty compelling poor relation. As I mentioned in the initial post, I'd never liked 996 lights, and now suddenly I'm looking at them in a different light and thinking that maybe they still don't look so bad!

IMS and RMS aren't major issues. Take it from someone who suffered bore score But don't worry about it - if it happens, it happens. Enjoy the car

I have had my 996 C2 for over 5 years now and it still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. Also bought from Phil Raby and in black.

I'm Lovely looking things. I see these in a similar light to how the 964s were perceived for many years. I think, in the context of current & future 911s, the ones that survive and are cherished will gain a significant following in future years

So after a rather alarming sudden coolant loss which I've been exploring via the Porsche section here http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... (and now hopefully sorted), I'm slowly rebuilding trust. Even though it is the most humble and least loved 911 it really is a different experience to all the other cars I've had, and can really see why 911s get under people's skin to the exclusion of all else. It doesn't detract from the Z4M that I also have, which feels totally different in every conceivable way to the 996.

About £10k will get you into a good one, less if you're luck, a little more if you want to be safe. No reason why it couldn't be used as a daily I'd have thought - they are pretty robust and reliable (in theory)

I used mine as a daily for 4 years. A change in circumstances last year means mine is now a weekend toy, but it will be my daily again soon.

How does it compare to the Z4M from a driving perspective? I used to use my Z4M Roadster as a daily driver and it was a hugely rewarding and exciting car to drive, always seemingly wanting me to rev it out to the redline with the rear squirming a bit.

Is the Porsche that exciting?
