Is there a way to prime the fuel pump without turning over the engine? I'm convinced this is what is stopping my car from starting easily, the battery has had too much taken out of it aimlessly spinning the engine over with no fuel so that when its ready to fire, its not spinning quickly enough.
Is it the original engine and carb with no fuel return pipe?
If it is then if the car's been left for a few weeks then try turning it on the starter with the ignition off for 5 or 6 seconds and then leave it for a couple of minutes to let the fuel work it's way through the carb and cold start circuit. Then turn the ignition on and try again with full choke - should start after a few seconds.
Fuel seems to simply drain into the inlet manifold slowly by gravity over time and then evaporates so the carb just needs to be filled up before starting.
Worth checking the fuel pump is working properly - might need a new diaphragm. Also helps if there is plenty of fuel in the tank. I have a non return valve at the engine side on mine.
