I've got 30-40k to put away for a rainy day. I don't need instant access so it can be tied up for a number of years if necessary. I don't want anything too risky (!), so I'd like to put it into a high street name .. so what's the best thing to do? I've just been into the Nationwide and picked up a load of info on ISAs and Bonds so will be reading that to send me to sleep tonight.
Anyone got any good advice?

Cash ISAs pay a pittance. Low risk means low growth I'm afraid!

Santander 123 Account is one of the best, pays 3% (less tax) up to £20K, but you have to fund it with £500/m and set up two DDs. You'll also get cash back on utility bills. Not really a rainy day account though.

Do you have a mortgage? If so look at paying off some/all of it.

I have no mortgage .. low growth isn't a problem, I know interest rates are rock bottom anyway frown so I want somewhere safe where the money can go where it will earn a little bit whilst causing me next to no grief .. so basically it's : of the low rates I will get, which is best ?

Premium bonds keep your money safe and you could win big.

...but will probably just have your money eroded away by inflation.

Try P2P lending.

Inflation is pretty low at the moment (as are interest rates).
