Hi all,

I know very little about MB, as never had one before.

Considering a C220 or a E220 both diesel, both autos.

While driving, does the E220 feel that much longer and wider than the C220 ?
Are they basically the same 2.1 L engine?
I am guessing diesel consumption on both of them is not too far apart?

Would you entertain a high miler, circa 180k, but backed up with full MB service throught?

Try & get the C250/E250 yes the E class does feel bigger but not massively so, get the one with the best history/spec

What bodystyle are you looking at?

E-coupe as linked above has a shorter wheelbase, narrower track and different interior than saloon or estate so is closer to C-coupe in size.

E-saloon and estate feel bigger on the road than c-class but never unwieldy or too big, luggage space is noticeably more useful in the E-Class however.

If serviced correctly and well looked after that mileage shouldnt be an issue, posters on here have run the E-Class wuth that engine up to double that mileage.

A few MPG less with the E-Class and the C-Class feels lighter when overtaking and pushing on, Im in the latest E220 estate currently and the engine is adequate but nothing more.

Whilst you still have the option...go for an E class. The diesel engine is much less intrusive inside the cabin. The ride is better and overall refinement is better in every area.

I personally don't feel it's a deal breaker to get an E220 over an E250. The 220 is adequate for mile munching.

How different is the 220 to the 250 ?

The 250 has a bit more punch & low down grunt than the 220 test drive both versions & see what suits

Not much in it, if you think the 220 is too slow youre unlikely to be blown away by the 250.

More power is always better, but 250s sell in lower numbers so resale choice is more limited. I took the view that if I found a 250 in my ideal colour/trim/spec then great, but didnt and dont feel Ive lost out with a 220 as I can always remap it if I want as they are the same engine (cue usual arguments about how many turbos each has..yada yada..).

If you want the car as a nice cruiser/wafter an avangarde spec with full leather, auto and COMAND as options is a nicely specced place to be with lots as standard. Ive had one and now have the AMG line trim (previosuly known as sport) and the suspension is noticeably firmer, and IMO the aluminium trim inside not as nice as the black wood of the avantgarde.

This ^^^^ and don't worry about mileage. My 60' plate E220 is on 276k miles and still running perfectly, averaging 52+ mpg. Only non service items have been a set of rear shocks due to slight play in one top bush, and a water pump at 220k, a known weakness but cheap to replace.

My previous two E220's both did 315k miles in my ownership and neither needed a water pump, so it's all a bit relative I suppose wink
