Experiences of the D3 A8 W12????
Discussion
I've currently got a 2006 S6 avant. Pretty happy with it but the "avantness" of it never sat quite right with me. I much prefer a saloon.
Anyway, I've spotted a couple of likely candidates on Autotrader. One of them is a 2006 6.0 W12. Similar performance to the S6 but packaged in a saloon. Spec seems good with B&O, adaptive air suspension, advance key, TV, auto boot release. Only worrying thing is that it has carbon brakes. The car I'm looking at has over 100,000 miles on. Are the discs on the way out?
Any other things I should look out for?

I wouldnt touch one with carbon brakes. For me, its not a race car so i cant see the point. Its a luxury cruiser that has some grunt. Also would want the 4k bill to replace them!
On a D3 the main issue is the mmi center. The gears are plastic and can snap teeth, brass replacements are available but a ball ache to fit. Make sure the screen goes up and down fine and doesnt catch at the bottom.
Make sure all the keyless lock pads on top of all the handles work.
I had a D3 4.2 tdi and i cant think of anything that went wrong. Lovely motors.

At a guess I would say that 100K miles on a reasonably heavy car with ceramic brakes is a bit risky. I had them on my Porsche and they are superb but life expectancy on a light car was 100K+ Having said that if you can get steel replacements which you may be lucky and be able to obtain then that would be worth looking into. Good bargaining point for you because there is a lot of negative comments/thoughts about them.
Ceramics may well be OK on that example, given the likely usage, so long as they've not been physically damaged. It's almost impossible to inspect them in-situ. Assuming any cracks are within tolerance then only way to check how worn they are is to weigh them!
That's pretty pricey for the miles although the condition and spec look decent. The big caveat to that is it's a LWB which has different gearing to the S8 or SWB W12 and blunts acceleration.
If you like the V10 in your S6 then maybe an S8 would be a better option, as SWB only?
Unless you're running a limo business the LWB doesn't make a lot of sense.
Worth a look on A8Parts forum for advice - there's a couple of folk on there that run a chauffeur business using amongst other things a pair of W12s!
