996 oil gauge drop on way back from Le Mans...

Just after some advise please...

On the route back from Le Mans yesterday, about 25k from Calais, I had an oil warning light flash up, and the gauge dropped to zero. I of course thought the worst, but hesitantly put my foot back on the gas and it went straight back up. A few seconds later, the same thing.

I pulled over, let her cool, checked the oil and it was fine.

I subsequently continued and got home without a repeat. The car had been running at motor way speed for, give or take, 3.5 hours. Before I whizz on over to my dealership, I wanted advise from anyone who may have experienced this? I'm hoping that the light came on because the car was warm / oil was thinner perhaps?

Any ideas welcomed.

Possibly just the connection off the sender?

996 oil senders are a known regular failure item. Same thing happened (one of the oil warning lights also appeared) on my 996T twice, and had it replaced next time it was in.

Same thing happen to mine, as above sounds like the oil pressure sender has started to play up, quite common on these cars, nothing to worry about just get it changed when you get the car serviced next or do it yourself it's an easy job just a bit fiddly to get to.

I think we're talking oil pressure here (not volume, as there is no oil level gauge on a 996 on the move).

There's no need for any urgency - if the oil pressure actually drops in an engine, there's no way it can return to normal seconds later, meaning the pressure gauge must be faulty.

If it isn't reading anything at all on startup, yes, you'd probably want it fixed a bit sooner, but again, there's no real urgency. How many cars have we all driven in our lives that don't even have a oil pressure gauge?

Quick discussion of the symptons with my local Indy suggests the same - oil sender. I'm taking her in tomorrow morning for a "while you wait" fix.

Just to add this also happened a few times on my 996 Carrera 4. New sender sorted it. Mine was also not reading properly at other times with a bit of a flutter. I'd not really noticed this until it was pointed out by Autofarm. Then i couldn't not notice it!

All done. 1 x 466 330 160 Oil Pressure Sender fitted @ £46.50 + half hour labour.

Oh, and a nice drive home this morning...
