Interested to hear from the PH community about their experiences of Disco 4. Lots of haters out there been putting me off, but I'd like some opinions from you lot! Would be a second hander, prob 2010 or 2011 HSE, budget up to £35k. To be used as wife's runabout for school run and supermarket, plus family holidays down to France / Skiing 3 times a year.
Am I about to make a big mistake?! What should I be aware of?

Perhaps cannot help much but have just taken the plunge myself - collecting a week tomorrow my new (to me) March 2010 HSE. I previously had a 2004 HSE that was a nightmare so hoping for better this time. Got mine with two year Land Rover full warranty (I think all main dealers are offering this at the moment).

There's a good forum at disco4.com / disco3.co.uk (same place) - they will provide much more Discovery specific information than here, I suspect. Lots of fans there...

We love ours.
Bought it at about 12 months old in August last year for my Wife as she found her Evoque a little too small.
Driven to Germany in it. Pleasure on the Motorway, Autobahn etc.
Only problem I can think of was that the external trim on the near side A post came loose on a French Autoroute casing a few expletives from us both as it detached at about 130km/h.
LR were great, as I have found previously with the Evoque.

I think its a great car.
Good luck.

Seeing that you say "LR are great" does need to come with a warning - some dealers are reputed to be lying gits (had experience of one of them or at least a most unpleasant experience with one five years ago - might be going too far to say they lied. They did treat me abysmally though - and I have never found anyone who had a good word to say about them, I don't think!), while others are allegedly fab (not sure if I have found one of them yet - only time will tell)

Had both a 2006 D3 HSE and 2010 D4 HSE.

Really liked both and the D4 is a significant improvement in terms of more luxurious interior, nicer exterior and stronger performance. Owned the D4 for 3.5 years and approx 33k miles. It was faultless. It has a number of personalities A comfortable Limo, 7 seat People Carrier, Van, 4 x 4 off roader, towing vehicle.

Dislikes, it's heavy so we averaged 23-24MPG doing short trips and 28-29mpg on the motorway at sensible speeds. Servicing at main dealers every year in expensive and the costs for the same service vary with a large spread between different dealers. If I had kept ours, I would have taken it to an LR specialist for all servicing.

Stretch to an 8-speed if you can - your budget should find you a 61 or 12 plate.

Hi OopNorth, I can only say as I find as far as the Dealer response.
Maybe its the people in the Potteries in General as I have found the MB Dealer there FAR nicer to deal with than the one in Chester ?

The only negative that I have just remembered is that they took 4 months to get me a replacement TV remote for the rear TV screens....first world problems ah wink

so called - was just trying to provide a bit of balance to the op! I have had a nice experience with the supplying dealer so far (including a call to say they are replacing the tow bar as their checks revealed it had play in it - so I am hopeful they are actually checking it over properly, which seems a bit of a novelty in my experience so far!), so am living in hope it will continue to be so

Wife has a 61 plate 8 speed XS, bought with 10k miles, now has 41k

Been to Newquay and back a couple of times, to France, Scotland etc etc.

In the 32 months we've had it nothing has gone wrong (beyond the odd light bulb, stolen spare wheel, brakes replaced)

We are currently considering swapping it out for a 14 plate or waiting another year (or so) for the discovery 5.

We've filled it with the wife, 3 kids, grandma, a 48 kilo dog and a roof box and it easily did 450 mile journey.
Equally it was used to take 6 adults in black tie to a posh ball.

Try and get an 8 speed 255 BHP model....performance and gearbox is great....I have 3 points on my license to prove it.

My Dad had had 2 over the last few years, and I am looking to buy a later model next year. I have considered all the alternatives and keep coming back to this, my Dad has run D3/D4 for close to 10yrs and has only had 1 issue which was with the phone interface. Having driving the 8 speed model I would echo comments that it worth finding out, it's a very good all round package possibly only let down by the ageing infotainment (tbh aside from the new disco sport I don't think LR are great in this regard)

If you want a capable, refined, practical 7 seater not much else comes close IMHO. I was concerned about the impact of Discovery 5 on used D4 prices, but looking at the rest of the range they don't seem to have suffered too badly after new model launches. £35k buys a nice example from the main dealer with 2yrs warranty.
