A friend of mine bought his first house a year ago that came with 1 full time parking space outside and 50% of a visitor spot (shared with another).

Since day one he has had fireworks with the lady down the road initially starting with his parking place as she had claimed it her's (for her bf). Luckily this was sort of resolved with the deeds document showing exactly who owns what (however she was still not happy). Her bf then resorted to parking in the visitor spot.

Carry on a few months there is now issues over the shared space. His friend's girlfriend has been staying with him, sometimes 3/4 nights per week and using the space - technically "Visiting" as she does not live there. (however when she is not there the space remains empty as the lady down the road's bf has disappeared. - Even though the shared visitor place is nothing to do with her on the deeds).

There is plenty of empty spaces that simply never get used.. many of the people don't actually park in their own spaces, they park in which ever one is closest to their house.

My friend started to receive typed letters, from a "Stephen" from a council claiming that he was acting unlawfully etc and that they will remove the car parked there. However the council the letter is apparently from has many issues.

1. It's a council not even in or near the area
2. It's never letter headed
3. It's always print signed "Stephen" - no surname
4. No contact information, no phone numbers, no email & no return address.
5. Spelling mistakes (inc the chaps job description).

My friend has now taken to calling said council to report this, we know exactly who it is in the road as my friend has visited the other houses of which have said they have no issues as claimed in the letters. He has also called the local council who have no record of any issues in his road.

My friend has spoken the the house next to his (who the shared spot is with, she has no issues with how its being used - she doesn't even park in her correct spot).

Where does he stand with this; apart from reporting it to the council it's apparently from it's getting a little silly.

Why don't you just park in the spot?

We have a visitor spot at our place. Usually the same vehicles use it, no big deal. Sometimes when it's free I use it if I can't be bothered to put the car in the garage.

His girlfriend does park in it when she stays. I don't live close enough otherwise i'd love to leave a car in it.

He has just had a call back from the "Stephen" from the council who confirmed they have nothing to do with his area nor have heard of the situation before. So we can definitely rule out both the local council and the other council not in the area.

That letter is gold! As long as you are going by the spirit of the visitor's space, then crack on and just ignore it. It's just some looneytune jobsworth with a bee in their bonnet.

Send a likewise letter from "Dave at the council" saying that they are taking her to court over fake letters and brand and reputation impingement.

Might as well have a bit of fun...

It's shared so just get your friend to park in it on the days it's free.

Comedy gold.
Frame it.
I honestly can't believe you are worried about this, unless you are just entertaining us, in which case - thanks! smile

Given that it has been proven that the Council(s) are not involved in any way shape or form I would say that you have three options:-

1. look at the title fully and if there is a Man co get them involved - expensive, PITA and unlikely to actually resolve anything in an issue such as this.
2. Make up a joke parking permit signed by Stephen to put in the window of g/f's car.
3. Ignore and pretend they know and have seen nothing. If spoken to by other woman friend just says that they are contacting with 'someone at the council' trying to resolve the issue but it is proving difficult to progress as they don't ever seem to have heard of a 'Stephen' in that department. In fact the Council are looking into that side of things first as they are concerned that someone might be trying to pass themselves off as an officer of the council which you understand can have very serious legal ramifications.

I favour option 2, but this isn't legal advice, just musings of someone who dislikes idiots thinking that they are the law.

BTW your friend does realise that they are likely being blamed for the failure of the other person's relationship after the b/f left her because he couldn't park in a convenient space when stopping over to slip her a length doesn't he?

O/T but who on earth thinks it's acceptable to use "&" rather than "and" in even a vaguely formal communication.

He's a step further away than that - he's worried on someone else's behalf!

The sort of person who creates fake letters, maybe?

Can of worms these spaces drive me nuts as they always seem to end in arguments.

Clearly the letters are bs approach the council and ask what the hell they are on?

Problem is if she is bat st crazy it wont end there next it will be damage to cars or something, in my experience these neighbourly disputes only tend to escalate. If you gf can find somewhere else practical to park might be advisable to try and defuse however I dont see why you should.

I'd make write a letter from Stephen advising he has investigated the matter further and found the space does in fact belong to you and that we will write to the claimants advising such.

Print and stick it in your window

Cant understand the idiots in planning departments that allow these types of spaces, they're a guaranteed way to cause arguments.

The idiots that really cause the problem are the residents who always park in the free visitor space so that their own allocated space is left empty for their visitors... This is probably what was going on and the self appointed neighbourhood watchman/busybody/general nuisance has taken it upon themselves to start leaving notes on cars which the reasonable and decent lot end up stuck in the middle of.
