Pair of Lynxes

Two Army Lynxes passed low overhead at around nine o'clock last night. Apparently they had touched down briefly at a local cricket club and were on their way to Manchester City (Barton) Airfield. It was a very unusual sight as we're close to Manchester Airport and military stuff is rare (although by coincidence a poorly Chinook came over last week).

A friend suggested it was a navigation exercise; what does that entail?

A standard sortie generally would include some HLS's (possibly your cricket club as mentioned) and a few approaches or some fuel at an airfield. Plus flying around looking at maps. You also have land owners/farmers who allow you to land at certain locations on their land.
