Hi All

My gear knob has finally given in and the thread is now cracked all the way up so is spinning about. I've done some searching on this topic but can't quite find anything recent less than a few years and some of the links that were in posts are now broken. Then I started getting baffled by thread diameter conversations and home made adapters etc. Basically, I'm looking for a V8S matching gear knob and hand brake lever.

I like the idea of this which was referred to in a post.

http://www.racetechdirect.co.uk/f0039-tvr-car-part...

But it says not suitable for S Series. It says for Rover V8 gear box and the gear selector pattern seems to be as per V8S LT77 box rather than the T5, so did TVR weld a different thread onto the LT77 box selector that matches a V6 S?

Finally most of the ones I find on ebay or similar all say Not suitable for a lift up reverse gear which mine is so what's the thinking on this?

Thanks

V8S and V6S had different threads for the gear knob. Unless you have numerous dies to check the thread or a plethera of nuts then the easiest option might be to get along to a local meet and ask to swap knobs with a Chimp of Grief owner. I suspect the CHimp owner's will be nicer about it biggrin

I'm pretty sure the same knob thread was used on all the LT77 boxed cars.

Cheers. Might get some funny faces depending how a word this particular request!

I just rang racetech and they said they actually might have made an adapter for the gear knob on their website that they said wouldn't find in that link I posted so I'll have to measure my thread best I can and then see if it fits. I don't know if its just dia alone though as the thread itself may be different.

Hi,

I fitted the alloy gear knob from Racetech to my V8S. I contacted Racetech and they provided, with the gear knob, an insert which converts the alloy gear knob from M10 to 5/16 X 18 UNC which is the thread on the early Chimaera lever with the LT77 box.

It fitted with no problems.

Hi Rob

This is what was on the car when I bought it

http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-DAM6658

The one on it is a BMW gear knob which was, ahem, 'persuaded' to fit.

Right cheers Chris. I literally just put phone down from ordering the other one from racetech! I'll see how it looks and fits first. Does this SD1 one have the correct standard thread then for the car?

Ha ha. I'll stick with this aluminium one then. Guess that's the £30 difference in price then.

Same thing happened to mine a few years a go so I made a new insert from a bit of 15mm copper pipe and two nuts. These were soldered inside the tube so it screws onto the gear stick. A third nut then locks it in place and the knob is held onto the copper bit by the grub screws.

Since then I've made a threaded steel insert which the grub screws in the gear knob can bite into better than the copper tube. All sorted now.

That's some ingenuity. I'm gonna stick with the apparently simple screw adapter that comes with this new one I've ordered. If it doesn't fit for amy reason I'll be looking to this solution.
