Fatal RTC's involving police vehicles on increase.

The newspapers today published figures and statistics about about police vehicle collisions.

For those that haven't read it....here it is:

People killed last year in police car crashes: 30

Number of police car accidents per day last year: 55

The percentage of police car accidents that happened when NOT on a 999 call: 75%

Number of police car accidents in 2003/4: 20,221

Number involved in 999 calls: 5,940

Number of civilians killed since 1994: 178

Number of Police officer killed since 1994: 19

What are PH's views on the above and the future?

I wonder how many of these accidents are down to poor observation by the MoPs? I wonder how many are down to the "Green Light=Go, so dont bother checking" attitude.

OK, legally the BiBs are responsible for the accidents, but how many of the victims have contributed to their own demise?

It would probably give you a better idea of stats if they broke it down into the different classes of vehicles like Streetcop explained <90 bhp etc.

It does seem to imply class 1 drivers but doesn't actually say it.

The only true comparison that is needed is to compare deaths per million miles driven with the general public figure. This would probably prove police are no worse than anyone else so therefore nothing to be done about it? Or, perhaps try some sort of change to make a reduction. The raw data is of no real use.

The police 'service' driving is really at the 'last chance saloon'......

Another year like last year...and there's a very real chance that the power to pursue fleeing vehicles WILL be taken away from the police!!!!!!!!

That's the point I suppose...and not just the amount of miles; but the way in which many were travelled..

As with all statistics they must be read with care and only having a few headline stats does not make forming an opinion easy, but EVERY driver weather BIB or not needs more training

Trouble is; so much pressure is being placed on the Government regarding police RTCs...and now that the media are jumping on the bandwagon...(especially after the reporter v police van from a couple of years ago)...it's only a matter of time before the police don't speed at all.!

I wouldn't expect any fireworks with this POV, I see emergency service vehicles on a shout most days of the week and the number of people who do not see or hear them is untrue.

Just last night I saw an ambulance with lights and siren going waiting at a roundabout for people because their light was green If the ambulance had not stopped there would quite probably have been a collision.

I've seen that on many occasions too but the stats say that 75% of accidents do not happen on a 999 call out. They seem to me to be referring to general police driving standards but then the article talks about Hendon trained cops so I'm all a bit confused but that's noffin new.

According to the stats given, there are approximately 12 accidents per day involving BiB on 999 calls. That 4,000 per year! Have I read it wrong, or is that correct Gary?

That can't be right...in fact..no it's not...the figures are cocked up there somewhere...

There has been an increase..but it's not that much..

For the life of me..I don't know a way of getting around the problem.
