New Monaro to the group
Discussion
Hi people,
Just taking the opportunity to introduce myself having just bought a Monaro VXR from Elite (It was once actually James' own car in fact) The car in question is build no. 76 and is in Quick Silver. It's had a fair bit of time and money spend at Monkfish and is fitted with:
Full Wortec exhaust, cats and long tube headers
Wortec CAI
Remapped to an estimated 460fwhp
Pedders Suspension
AP Brakes
Ripshifter
Pedders Quick Rack
Pedders Road Response Pac
Pedders Rear End Pack
Pedders Strut Brace
HSV Badging
Having just driven it home via the Hindhead Tunnel (A couple of times!) I am loving the noise and the power delivery not to mention that my 6'5" frame actually fits comfortably in the car! (This was not really the case with my previous 996 Turbo!)
I'm based near Hamble / Southampton on the South Coast so look forward to meeting fellow owners down here. If you're planning on a drive out I'd love to tag along!
Future plans? Well once the dust settles and I've "Bonded" with the car I'm toying mainly with the idea of a more aggressive cam and perhaps a 3.9 diff. Beyond that who knows... Too early to say!
So hi there guys and gals, looking forward to joining in with this merry little band!

I would do the cam first, and depending how you feel then, consider a 3.7 diff instead of the 3.9 (just because you may find that too short your gearbox ratios).Future plans? Hello Daron, welcome along. I'm local to you (near Fareham) and also bought my Monaro VXR from Elite earlier this year and I'm very pleased with it. Yours sounds like it has all the best mods, I'm envious! I'm thinking of getting the Ripshifter next; what's your opinion of it so far?
Regards, Mike.
Regards, Mike.
Hi Daron.
Good choice! I test-drove your car recently at Elite when looking for a Monaro. Ultimately bought an unmodified VXR from James, but a few months down the line I'm half-thinking that I should have bought your car in retrospect. The Monaro really needs the AP brakes, as I'm finding the standard VXR installation a tad weak. The Ripshifter is another essential; standard gearshift feels like it was designed and built in East Germany during the Cold War. They're great cars though, and I can drive round the niggles.
Yours has everything sorted, bar a supercharger of course. Enjoy.

I think when it's time for new discs and pads I might get the AP upgrade. Meanwhile, I've got Performance Friction pads and new brake fluid and braking seems fine.........I don't drive hard though, to be fair. Perhaps will get the Fish to fit braided lines to the standard brakes.Like the gearshift comment LOL, like you say the niggles are part of the "Ro Experience".
Mike.
Many thanks to you all for the warm welcome! 24 hours into owning the Monaro and it's still managing to surprise me! Christ but that engine asks a lot of those little 245 tyres...
Bluedevil - was yours the 07 plate with the black spoiler I saw there Friday week ago? If so it was VERY nice and I probably would have made an offer if James hadn't said it was already sold. Nice car though and hoping you're enjoying yours as much as I am mine!
Brave Fart - if you fancy trying out the Ripshifter just let me know. As you say I'm just around the corner from you (Near Hamble) and would be happy to let you try it. What do I think of it? Quite early yet but what I can say is that it is VERY "Mechanical" and feels 100% in keeping with the car. Is it light, precise and delicate? No. It's not an MX 5. Is it well engineered, rewarding and... *ahem*... Manly? Oh yes! From what I've heard of the standard shifter I would have fitted one immediately anyway so the fact one has come with the car is a bonus. If you're around and interested there is a little event on at Shamrock Quay in Southampton (Just over the Itchen Bridge) this evening from 6pm called Classics on the Quay (https://www.facebook.com/classiconthequay) let me know if you fancy coming along and you can give the Ripshifter a go.
Speedtwelve - The brakes are superb with the big AP Racings! I haven't had to use them "In anger" yet but the feel they give you is very confidence inspiring. Prior to the 'Ro I had a Porsche 996 Turbo and even after fitting Performance Friction discs onto it the brakes never felt half as good as these ones do. Having gone through the various receipts and invoices last night (It was a quiet night!) my car has had the big AP's fitted along with DBA floating discs, DS2500 pads, fresh and quality fluid and braided brake lines so I think the brakes are probably as good as they'll get without going silly. I'll admit the brakes were a major reason for buying this car as they are NEARLY as impressive as the exhaust note!
Preciousmetal - this is indeed a good example of the breadth of your customer base! I imagine that, if such things were allowed, many many people here would speak very highly of you!
So once again thank you all for your welcome. What a great community this is and Brave Fart give me a shout any time you want to see how the Ripshifter feels.
