Accessing The Engine of 997 when door switch faulty?
Discussion
There's an emergency cable (with a loop) under the near side rear light cluster. You have to insert something (a pick) between the bumper and the light to fish it out. Try using a flat plastic wedge to open a gap for your pick. When you have the loop, pull it away from the lock to open.

Thanks I'll give this a go. Do you know if the switch is easy to replace yourself? I can pick up a new one on ebay for less than a £100?
Could be a switch. Could be a fuse. I discovered the spoiler fuse also is the fuse for my (996) Turbo's engine compartment lid when I pulled the spoiler fuse to prevent spoiler deployment when the spoiler hydraulic system was bad.I replaced the bonnet/engine cover switch on a 997 a couple of years back - took about 10 mins and the part was around £60 IIRC from Porsche. There are one or two little plastic caps you remove then you can use an alan key to loosen the bolts that hold the switch in place then it lefts out,, swap it over and screw tight again. Pretty simple to figure out (I had no instructions).
