A soft banging around sound in the rear (?) and no transmission ... engine runs fine but gears won't engage. Hydraulic fluid still topped off. Haven't looked underneath yet but nothing visible from the sides. Thoughts of what to do next ... ?

What happens if you try starting in gear with clutch down, does car lurch forward?

If it doesn't, does it move forward if you let the clutch up?

If no movement rev the engine, does speedo register?

Now it's time to either:

A. get underneath

B. call the tow truck.

Driveshaft bolts fallen out/sheared/missing????/
You could still get gears but have no drive to rear wheels ( if it's an open diff. ie non-LSD )

That was it. Bolts had come loose - exactly as in your photo - and one sheared. Bolted back together and used threadlocker this time. Did the same for the bolts on other three CVs. The car runs fine.

An interesting characteristic of the Detroit's Torsen design is that it biases torque from one side to the other, and if you have no load on one wheel, then you end up multiplying the bias by zero. That’s why the Detroit is useless when you lift a tire in the air. But as long as you at least have some grip on both wheels, the Detroit is great.

More info on the MC2racing.com website.

And a happy additional benefit was that there was no damage.
