Can somebody identify this shifter?
Discussion
Hi all, I found this in my shed - I believe it is a shifter that was removed when I had a ripshifter fitted by a tuner about 10 years ago. There are no part numbers on it. I'm considering re-installing it because the ripshifter fitted has always rattled and I've been unable to cure it. But I can't see how the gearknob attaches to the shaft - is there a bit missing? Thanks, Paul.

Thanks KMud, I'm going to try and fit a solid ball type kear knob to the existing off set shaft. I don't care that it will vibrate a bit, it's the rattling with the existing ripshifter that I no longer want to put up with!
Ah, well there's a Hurst ball and stick that would go onto your shifter. I have one of those too...

Well I finally got around to fitting the original shifter. What a pita it is to remove the (upwards facing) allen bolts between the top of the box and the floorpan ... when you are working in a single garage and only have the front end jacked up!
I found the cause of the worsening buzzing noise coming from the ripshifter - the centre ball joint assembly appears to have worn out there is about 2mm slop all around in the joint. It's only been on the car for about 30,000 miles. I didn't have the bit that connects the change lever to the gear knob so I had to cut the end off the ripshifter and use that. Had to drill 2 10mm holes in it and grind a bit of the welding down so as to bolt up with the threads in the change lever. The gear knob is offset now (and it is sitting a bit lower than standard) but I can sort that later- the main thing is the shift is way way better. I never liked the strange change angle that comes with with the S lever type on this ripshifter. The rattling has gone and I can hear the engine better now
Here is the rattling ripper:

Probably due to poor or un-hardened material. The ripshifter is the most expensive one on the market AFAIK so you would think it should last longer than that? Having said that there are two versions, one being a "race" type which is I think noisier in operation.Edited by GSE on Wednesday 8th July 20:16
I have one on the GTS and must say, generally I'm not impressed, but I did have the car second hand, so it may be worn out already? I know other people swear by the BMR short shifter and fleabay is littered with various copies.

I replaced those bolts for that very reason with a standard hex bolt. Much easier than messing with allen bolts.Gassing Station | HSV & Monaro | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
