Finding Grandad's SS Jaguar

Hi Guys,
It seems there is a lot of love for, and knowledge of, old Jaguars in this forum. I'm wondering if anyone can help me. My Dad and I are trying to see if we can locate my Grandad's Jaguar SS 1.5 litre. The details when he bought it (that you can see on the original purchase invoice below) were:
Chassis No. 70487
Engine No. K.B.224
Registration No. DDA 499
First registered on 8/5/1940
Obviously the registration could have changed many times by now. What do you think is my best chance of finding the car? We would dearly love to bring the car back into the family if it still exists.

Well, DDA 499 doesn't come up on the check site I used, so that would imply if it's still around it's either been re-registered, or in a garage since before the records were computerised. Neither necessarily bad news. As you say, many Jaguar experts on here who I'm sure will comment on where best to look.

It will probably be difficult trying to find a car without the numbers. Chassis numbers are the easiest thing to search on, any old paperwork you can find will help. Good luck

I received some further information about the car in a nice email from Allan Crouch at the SS register. Some of the information might be of interest to anyone with a similar car so I will reproduce an edited version here:
The 1940 model cars are the ones with the lowest survival rate I'm afraid. Of the 654 cars of that model made, I only know of 9 survivors so you can see the problem. The War and petrol rationing took a huge toll on the cars at that time.
Your Grandfather's car was Gunmetal when new. For your interest the car was actually made in October 1939, so a long time for it to get sold by Charles Attwood in Wolverhampton.

London Road was known as "Spiv-alley" in the 1940's and 1950's. It was apparently common for the dealers to take out Hire Purchase on the next Manchester Corporation bus to come round the corner if they'd had a bad week. Hanover Mill, Buxton St still exists, but has probably been made in to apartements for hipsters.

Nice looking saloon though in the true Jaguar style.

As was being made in October 1939, which meant it must have been one of the last of civilian vehicle production, as it was around this time that all civilian vehicle production was halted.My Dad had 3 2.5l saloons in the 60's (2 that worked and one for spares he always used to say

The last one he sold for £40 when he was forced to get rid by his parents,....... JVO 444 was the reg, I have a pic of it somewhere, no idea if it's still around.
Still got some spares in Mum's loft, including 2 massive P100? lamps and radiator grill, thinking I might mount them on the wall in my lads bedroom,..
