Maybe I've misread the service handbook, but the service 'regime' on Mrs SB's A3 seems bonkers.

It's 18 months old, with 18K on the clock. First 'variable' oil change service was done at just under 14K - and it's now nagging that 'Inspection' is due in 800 miles (19K).

From what I can tell, Inspection service *includes* oil and filter, so the 'long life' oil is going to be replaced after just 5K/6 months???

I know it's recommended to switch to the 'fixed' service intervals (9K oil changes) , but that seems even more bizarre, because if you followed them religiously you'd be doing Oil Services at 9k and 18K, followed by Inspection Service with oil change just 1000 miles later at 19K.

Common sense seems to imply that the best approach is to change oil at 9K, Inspection at 18K, rinse and repeat...

Depends on the type of driving you do. I guess I can ask to have the inspection done, but without the oil change. Would they still sign the book?

Its amazing what little the do extra for the 'inspection' service. Bath Audi just called me and they said im due the inspection rather than oil change service, and i asked what they did - 'oh lots of inspections and change the pollen filter..' Hmm

They can fall out off sync. Had this problem with a very low mileage A1 a couple of years ago. Called for its first service (just an oil change) at 18-months/ 8k miles, then 6-months/ 2k miles later it started counting down 30 days to full service due!

Having the same problem myself now. One of the golf GTI cheap leases, due an oil service in 7 days and inspection in 6 months... Cars due back 8 months.

Am I able to just get a full inspection now then next oil change won't be due till after I hand it back?

Yes; ask for an oil & inspection service.

Some of the guys on the leased Alltrack thread are having this issue - cars calling for an oil service, but VW dealers saying they can't have just an oil service.

So they're getting the fixed interval minor service instead, which isn't the service the car should be having as the checks are very basic - the Inspection service checks are the same as the fixed interval major service.

Not that it matter on a leased car, but irritating if it's your own and you intend to hang on to it for a while. Or you're buying a used one as its history will be scant.

Thanks thinking full service is the best option. But I called VW again today to sort this and once again they don't know. I've phoned VWFS and Cardiff dealership where the car was registered and a couple of local ones all say different things...

Local dealership has told me to bring it in for them to look at the oil, if okay they will reset the service indicator as there saying it should be 18k or two years.

Would just get the full service but it's £240.

Just to add, im (and several others) are having the same issue with the Cupra leases.

Mine has flagged for an oil service at 8k miles and 15mo into a 24mo lease. With the inspection service showing for the cars 2nd anniv.

The local dealer are swearing down that it doesnt require *any* service until 2yrs/18k miles and that they just need to reset the service light.

So it's a wider VAG problem... Can't believe they don't have a set response on this.

Anyway, mines booked in for Thursday, there going to check the oil.... If it needs a service I've said to do oil change and inspection to avoid having to do them separately over the next coming 10 months. Partners moaning saying "wish we still had the focus", I just used to get a 40 quid oil change every year, our wedding is in 4 months so funds are rather tight at the minute.

Same here - ive told my dealer to do the 2yr inspection service wether it needs it or not - figured id have to pay for at least one service while i have it so might as well get it out the way.

I don't know what parameters affect the variable servicing, but it strikes me as entirely feasible that a car that's only done 8K in 15mths could well be calling for an oil change due to lots of cold starts and short journeys.

Im not disputing that it doesn't, commutes of 5miles each way in city centre will not have done the oil any good at all.
if i had been given the option initially its clear that the fixed servicing is the right choice for me based on the parameters in the documentation:
http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/servicing/regim...

My issue is with the cluelessness of the dealers who were happy enough to just reset the service warning saying it must be a mistake as service not due for another 9 months.

It's not like VAG dealers to miss the chance to get money out of customers. The one I use would be telling me it was 'mandatory' to follow the service indicator.

On my A3 the inspection service is just that, they do fook all other than look at the car for 90 mins. Anything that may need doing is extra. Afaik an oil service then an inspection happen one after the other just whenever the car calls for each one.

Update - back from the garage, they reset the oil service indicator to the two year period having looked at the service log on the car itself and speaking with dealership that registered it...

Only paid £55 for tires to be swapped front to rear. And they did their free car check and got a video of it all.
