Sister -> 54 in a 30
Discussion
all terrain...
I would estimate your sister will get 4 points and a heavy fine.....(in relation to her income, etc)
You need to be taking her on one side and explaining the importance of experience etc, as she is exceeding a 30mph speed limit by such an amount with less than 2 years of having a licence..

Liebchen - I think that almost double the speed limit in this urban area (und was it an urban dual carriageway - always cause problem to folks regardless of experience as "easy read" as faster road - especially if no reminder signs) - she ist looking at licence being made provisional again.
This means she would have to sit both parts of L/test again und get licence back - und apparently mit the 6 points. So she must be even more careful mit licence thereafter.
I would recommend she applies for retest as soon as the licence becomes provisional, books a few lessons to cull any bad habits und so on. Und also tell her to read RoadCraft
Und think COAST before she sets off!

Says he who got pulled last week for doing 92mph on the motorway...
Although 92 on the motorway (emptyish!) is nothing special, 54 in a 30 is a bit careless (assuming it's not a big dual carraigeway)
This is becoming more of a problem that will increasingly catch people out - I mean the tendency to put 30 mph limits on roads that really do not look at all like 30 mph situations.
I had a trip to Blackpool and Preston today and there were damned speed cameras all over the place. Some guy driving out of Preston along Blackpool Road at lunch time got himself a couple of quick flashes (of the wrong sort
) as I was travelling the other way. I just hope there was no film in the camera. It was so pleasant to get back to North Yorks and no fixed cameras.
It's a pity you can't persuade a few other counties to see sense and get rid of the wretched things - keep trying though, and good luck. Best wishes all,
Dave.

Some people think Gods Country isn't blessed, as they never know where a trafpol might be parked up with a speed-gun.
At least with fixed cameras, the speeding driver can accellerate and slow down for camera..etc
I got done in '98 for 54 in a 30 in the sleepy town of Carrbridge just off the A9 heading towards Inverness.
Never been there before - has long straight after the village that goes across common land with a couple of houses on one side a way back from the roadside,
Mistook the road for de-restricted and get pulled for 54 in the (still 30) limit by police hiding in bushes (wish I'd noticed the lamp posts in hindsight).
Got 3 points and £120 fine.
Got back home and found out that mate also got done on same stretch of road after making similar mistake. Apparently is it a known speed trap amongst the locals. Surely if road safety is the REAL issue there then a couple of extre speed limit signs and/or road markings would have been far more effective in preventing such "deadly" breaches of the law.

Let you into a little secret.
Wildy and I have lived in our neck of the woods for a lot longer than Steve Callaghan.
He does not target roads which have a bad accident record at all.
The speed traps are actually on the same roads which we knew as having a reputation for speed traps in the good ol' days of police only! Hence Wildy and self have never speeded on them.
They never did have a severe accident history either... just known as places where you'd be tempted to push the envelope a bit and where locals always knew the police would do you if they could!
Callaghan, of course, will refute this - as he is paid to spin his garbage that he is "after saving lives." And as we all know - Cumbria has not had a very good 2004 for a variety of reasons - not all to do with speed, but all down to driver error and a bad luck element of one sort or another. Cannot say his speed traps caused any of them - only that he goes for easy revenue raising targets as most of the accidents occurred at the real danger sites - which are nowhere near the scams!
Conclusion as this appears to be common place around the country?
safety is not the priority!
I saw a Talivan in Nottingham the other week on a wide 30mph road - single carriageway, 2 lanes each way. There is a steep downhill bit where people's speeds tend to creep up a little bit.
The van was positioned to make the best of this as many people's speeds may just drift over the threshold speed before they notice and correct.
I'm sure a speed activated sign on this stretch that lit at speeds over 30 would be a far more permanent and effective solution than the local highway robbery professionals.
Not as lucrative for them though!

It's a common scam to hide speed limits, and has nothing to do with safety!!
I had the same issue on a stretch of road, no limit signs for miles, near a roundabout with a petrol station, bridge and lamp posts at a section of the A505/Sawston. Most people passed the new Gatso hidden behind a sign on the bridge at 28mph, some did it at 38mph and the odd guy risked over 50. I used to see if the car in front got flashed (none ever did) and just go a bit slower than them.
I had to look up the official camera website to work out the speed limit - the limit was 60mph.. they covered it up after a while as I guess it was dangerous and worst of all never made any money
And people wonder why we don't respect the safety (spelt t.a.x-t.h.e.f.t) squad..

At least we can all take solice in the fact that many of people who vociferously support speed cameras will sooner-or later get caught out in the same way.
Mind you some drivers don't go over 30 on any road!
Oh but they do. I found a bod doing 45 mph last night!
I was making excellent progress at about 85-90 on my way home when I caught up with three cars all following each other closely, so it had to be pass all three or do nothing. I couldn't overtake immediately so I had to tag along with them for half a mile or so. The leader set the pace at about 45 mph and then braked down to 35-40 mph when he saw a bend ahead. As soon as we cleared that bend I passed all three of them and went straight back up to about 75-80. None of the others passed the leader so far as I could tell.
OK so it was raining gently at the time, but visiblity was unimpaired, and I would have thought they should have been able to progress at 60 mph without trouble.
I think a lot of the difficulty is people are becoming less capable of judging conditions with reasonable confidence and reliability.
Best wishes all,
Dave.

Blimey they must've been giving it some! Can picture them now, hunched over (or maybe looking through) the steering wheel, white knuckles and scared expression.
The worst thing is the people following neither overtaking nor leaving a gap as per the highway code.
